Astrology and Human Design

The two systems share an ephemeris and a 360-degree wheel. After that they diverge fast, and a good deal of confusion comes from software that presents them as one subject with shared machinery.

This page maps every common astrological topic onto what Human Design does with it, including the ones it does not use at all.

What Human Design took, and what it left

Astrology is one of four traditions in the synthesis, alongside the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system. What it contributed is the ephemeris, the wheel and the planetary bodies. What it did not contribute is most of what an astrologer does: no houses, no aspects, no rulerships, no signs as interpretive units.

In their place the system puts something astrology has no equivalent of, which is a second calculation taken 88 degrees before birth, and a far finer division of the wheel: 64 gates, 384 lines, and color, tone and base beneath those.

Degree symbolism The equivalent depth comes from subdivision rather than from images. Each gate holds six lines, and beneath the line sit color, tone and base, which is six levels of resolution from one degree. Substructure

Where astrology is taught here

Three places, each because there is something real to add rather than a topic to cover.

  • Medical astrology and decumbiture, where classical technique is taught in its own right and correlated with the nine centers without being blended into them.
  • Fixed stars, which sit behind the planetary program in Rave Cosmology and carry the 2027 material.
  • The life cycles, which are the Saturn, Uranus and Chiron returns read as transits against the natal design.

Vedic astrology I have studied separately for nine years, and it lives at vedicastrology.io rather than here. Degree-symbol systems, astro-tarot and Chinese astrology are covered on some chart platforms and are not taught on this site, which is why you will not find pages on them here. Publishing on a subject I have not taught would be exactly the thing this site exists to argue against.

Common questions

Is Human Design a kind of astrology?

It uses an ephemeris and a 360-degree wheel, and beyond that the two systems diverge quickly. Human Design takes two calculations rather than one, maps 64 gates onto the wheel instead of 12 signs, uses no houses and no aspects, and produces a bodygraph rather than a horoscope. Astrology is one of four traditions in its synthesis, alongside the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system.

Do I need to learn astrology to learn Human Design?

No. Nothing in Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, the centers, the gates or the channels requires any astrological knowledge, and a good deal of astrological habit gets in the way early on. It becomes useful much later, at the cosmology end, where fixed stars and global cycles live.

Why does my Sun sign not match my Human Design Sun?

Because they are different divisions of the same wheel. Your Sun is at one degree of longitude, and astrology reports which of 12 signs that degree falls in while Human Design reports which of 64 gates and which of 384 lines it falls in. Both are correct descriptions of the same position.

Should I read my chart in sidereal?

Not as a Human Design chart. The gate positions are tropical, and shifting frames moves every activation by roughly 24 degrees, which changes gates, lines, Type and Authority. If you work in a sidereal tradition, that is a real practice with its own integrity. It produces something other than a bodygraph.

Does this site teach astrology?

Only where it has been taught properly and has something to add: medical astrology and decumbiture, the fixed stars inside Rave Cosmology, and the cycles. Vedic astrology is studied separately and lives on its own site. Techniques that have not been taught here are named on this page rather than written up, which is deliberate.
