The Bardo: what Human Design says happens after the body stops

The Bardo is the structured unraveling that follows physical death. When the body dies, the aspects of a design that placed a person in the life and kept the vehicle running separate from the form for good. What lingers is the personality, built out of memory, conditioning and self-image, with nothing left to drive. Ra Uru Hu taught that this remainder comes apart across three stages in a fixed order, and that the order is decided by one mechanical fact: the gate and line transiting Earth held at the moment of death.

Why this is read from the death rather than the birth

Almost everything else on this site depends on a birth time. The Bardo does not. Its entry point comes from a transit at the moment of death, which means a chart with shaky birth data can still produce a sound reading, and a chart with an immaculate birth certificate produces none at all unless somebody wrote down the hour someone died.

That inverts the usual problem. Across the cases below, the weakest birth record belongs to James Garfield, whose time is a family memory, and his death is one of the most precisely attended in the set: his own physicians at the shore in Elberon, timing the end to the minute. The reading holds because the part of it that matters was recorded.

Earth crosses a single line in roughly a day, so an hour is usually precision enough. In the Kennedy case the thirty minutes between the shots in Dealey Plaza and the pronouncement at Parkland do not move Earth off its line at all, which is a useful demonstration of how much slack the mechanic actually carries.

The six stations and where a death enters them

The line transiting Earth holds names the station the sequence opens on. From there it walks three consecutive stations and stops, wrapping past the sixth back around to the first.

Duration is the part the teaching refuses to standardize. A day to a day and a half covers every case worked here, and Ra described his own opening stage as running in hours rather than to any fixed span. The order is exact. The clock is not.

What this page stops short of

Ra went one layer deeper for his own passing, naming the Guardian: the planet found exalted, or in detriment, at the precise gate and line Earth held. That layer is read out of the Rave I'Ching, and this site holds no license to reproduce it. Every case below stops at the position of transiting Earth and the stage it opened, and this page stops there too. Where a reading of yours goes further than that, ask which licensed source it came out of.

Eight documented cases

Rather than argue the mechanics in the abstract, the series works them against deaths whose times are on the public record, and says in each case where that time came from before it says anything else. Seven of the eight are American public figures. The first is the man who taught the material.

Before the Bardo: the body's approach

The Bardo begins after a separation that the system describes in its own terms, and those terms do not match the clinical ones exactly. These three cover the approach and the threshold rather than what follows them.

• True death. What the system adds to brain death and heart death, and why the distinction decides when the Bardo actually starts.
• Stage one. How the body is mapped as it approaches the end, before the separation the Bardo describes has happened at all.
• The death wheel. What Gate 14 shows about the final turn, and how the wheel is read on the dying side rather than the living one.

Nothing here forecasts an ending. It is read backwards, from deaths already recorded, which is the only direction the material honestly runs in.

What is the Bardo in Human Design?

How long does the Bardo last?

Roughly a day to a day and a half in the cases worked here, though the teaching is explicit that the duration is not uniform. Ra described his own first stage as measured in hours rather than a fixed span. The sequence is precise about order and imprecise about clock time, which is the opposite of how most afterlife accounts are built.

What decides which stage a person enters at?

The line held by transiting Earth at the instant of death, and nothing else. Earth moves through one line in roughly a day, so a death time recorded to the hour is usually enough to fix the entry point. A death time nobody wrote down is not, which is why every case in this series states how the time was sourced before it states anything mechanical.

Does the Bardo require an accurate birth time?

No, and this is what makes the series possible at all. The entry point is read from the transit at death rather than from the natal chart, so a chart whose birth time is a family memory still produces a sound Bardo reading as long as the death was timed. Garfield is the clearest example here: weak birth data, an exactly recorded death.

What is a Guardian, and why is it not on this page?

In Ra’s teaching the Guardian is the planet found exalted, or in detriment, at the exact gate and line transiting Earth held at death, and its character is said to reflect back on the life just completed. That layer is read out of the Rave I’Ching, which this site holds no license to reproduce. Every post in this series stops at the position of transiting Earth and the stage it opened, and so does this page.

Is any of this a prediction about how someone will die?

No. Nothing in the Bardo material is forecasting. It is read backwards from a death that has already happened and a time that was already recorded, which is why the series works from public figures with documented deaths rather than from living charts. There is no version of this that tells you your own date.
