Laveena's Personal Storyline Part 1 - Link Nodes, the Cognitive Potential

The Unconscious North Node, aka “Rahu” on the body side, is the Body’s link node to the personality. It’s also the point of imprinting that shows your Human Design Fixed Star. My Link Nodes are Unconscious Rahu: Gate 28, Conscious Ketu: Gate 42. This is Part 1 of my own storyline share, where I walk through what these two gates actually taught me about myself once I sat with them properly, rather than treating them as one more pair of numbers on the chart.

Starting With the Surface: Type, Authority, Profile

Before getting into the link nodes themselves, it’s worth grounding in the basics of my own design, because the link nodes don’t operate in isolation from them. My natal design is Projected, with emotional Authority, and a 3/5 profile. The Right Angle in that cross means I’m someone self-absorbed in my own process, carrying a personal destiny rather than a transpersonal or fixed one. I also carry a wide split definition, which means I’m designed to collaborate with the right others, the specific people who recognize my strengths and invite my gifts rather than people I have to convince or chase. My decision-making runs through emotional intelligence combined with a cognitive feeling awareness, and that combination is the actual authoritative process underneath my Type.

That’s the frame the link nodes sit inside. They aren’t part of my definition; they’re unconscious placements, undefined Splenic Center for the Rahu side, undefined Sacral for the Ketu side, and undefined placements work differently than defined ones. There’s no fixed channel holding them steady, which means the way I experience them can shift depending on who and what I’m around.

The Cognitive Potential: Gate 42, Line 6

My cognitive potential sits at Gate 42, line 6. Because it’s a sixth line activation without a planetary placement locking it into an exalted or detriment position, and without a defined channel underneath it, this part of my design hasn’t reached its full maturity yet. Sixth lines mature slowly, and the full arc of that maturity doesn’t complete until much later in life. What that means practically is that I can be conditioned to see endings in a lot of different ways, depending on the environment I’m in, rather than experiencing one fixed relationship to how things conclude.

What I notice, when I’m paying attention to this pattern in myself, is a tendency to see how things end before other people do. I notice when people enter into situations incorrectly and then can’t bring them to a proper close. Gate 42 is the gate of growth, of completing cycles of experience, and in the dream rave analysis it’s also connected to decay, the natural ending cycles of the body itself. So this placement gives me an eye for endings, correctly used or badly mishandled, running underneath everything else in my design.

What the Personality Link Node Actually Does

The Personality South Node, in this framework, is the one gate and the one activation where the personality directly recognizes the vehicle, meaning it’s a bridge between who you think you are and the body you’re actually living in. That makes the link node potentially one of the more useful keys for helping someone come into their Strategy and Authority in the first place, because it’s already built to translate between mind and body rather than sitting entirely on one side.

Gate 42 carries a keynote around the expansion of resources that maximizes the development of full potential. Combined with a second line environment, which is a relatively uncommon placement, this describes a gift for guiding growth and helping other people bring their own cycles of experience to a proper finish. Whether that gift shows up as it’s meant to depends heavily on the framework someone is operating inside: how they’re being in their life, in their environment, in how they look outward, and in how they deal with others.

For most of my life, I would have described myself as caring, or compassionate, selectively so, toward my own people, my own tribe. What surprised me, reading through this material properly, was how often people had actually been describing me as nurturing, a word my conscious mind hadn’t reached for on its own. That gap between how I saw myself and how I was actually being received was a real moment of recognition. Sixth line energy at Gate 42 carries a nurturing keynote, and I can see now how central nurturing has become to my own storyline, not because I set out to cultivate it, but because it’s what shows up more and more as I operate correctly. It isn’t something I can manufacture. It’s something I notice increasing the more I stay aligned, and it has to land with the right people for it to actually register as nurturing rather than overreach.

There’s an important distinction buried in how this link node operates: the personality doesn’t create the nurturing directly. It passes the information to the body, and only the body can actually generate it. Everything I consciously think I am is personality, and this link node is part of that self-concept, not a direct tuning into the body’s own frequency. It shapes how I interpret myself, without being the mechanism that produces the behavior.

Gate 28: The Game Player Underneath

The other half of my link nodes is Gate 28, the Game Player, sitting as my unconscious cognitive potential. Gate 28 speaks to the transitory nature of power and influence, the willingness to risk everything for what looks like victory in the moment. At its more grounded expression, it strengthens the ability to see through a personal, meaningful lens rather than getting caught in the shallower question of who’s winning and who’s losing.

I recognize this one in myself immediately: a natural risk taker, someone capable of what this gate calls a distasteful alliance, meaning that when a situation turns into a real struggle, there’s an intuitive willingness to accept whatever alliance is necessary to win, even at the risk of compromising a principle when victory isn’t guaranteed. I’ve lived that pattern out directly, more than once, and seeing it named this specifically in my own chart was less flattering than the nurturing discovery, but just as accurate.

Why Undefined Placements Read Differently

It’s worth pausing on why both of my link nodes sit in undefined centers, because that changes how this material actually applies to me versus someone with the same gates locked into a defined channel. An undefined Splenic Center and an undefined Sacral Center mean there’s no fixed, always-on current running through either of these gates. What I get instead is variability: the Gate 28 risk-taking current and the Gate 42 growth-and-completion current both show up more conditionally, shaped heavily by who I’m around and what environment I’m standing in. That’s a very different experience than someone whose 28 or 42 activation sits inside a defined channel, where the theme runs consistently regardless of who’s nearby.

This is part of why I don’t read my own link nodes, or anyone else’s, as a fixed personality trait to announce and be done with. They’re closer to a recurring signature that shows up across a life, sometimes loudly, sometimes barely visible, depending on the aura someone happens to be standing inside that day. Watching for the pattern over years, rather than expecting it to announce itself in a single sitting, is closer to how this material actually reveals itself.

What This Means for Incarnation Crosses

There’s a reason I get pulled toward specific kinds of people and specific kinds of Incarnation Crosses repeatedly throughout my life, and it traces back to these same link nodes. Because my Unconscious Rahu sits at Gate 28 and my Conscious Ketu sits at Gate 42, I find myself fulfilling my own purpose through relationships with people who carry those same gates prominently, or who are moving through life cycles that mirror that particular growth-and-risk pairing. That’s not coincidence in the way most people use the word. It’s the nodal path doing exactly what it’s built to do: pulling specific kinds of encounters toward a person because those encounters are part of how that person’s own storyline completes itself.

A Memory Trick, and an Invitation

Here’s a simple way to keep the two nodes straight, since the Sanskrit terms trip a lot of people up at first: Ra Uru Hu brought us the Human Design System for our children, and children are our future. The north node points toward the future direction, so Rahu equals the North Node.

If you want to try this for yourself, look at your own storyline and cognitive potential this week. Sit with what your life looked like before Human Design found you, and compare that to what your life looks like now. The longer you’ve been doing this deconditioning work, the more that comparison will show you, because the first seven-year cycle of deconditioning is a slow, singular process. Nobody else can live it for you. You’re the only one breathing this particular body, witnessing this particular personality, which is exactly why it matters to name what you find and share the transformation with the people around you, so they can see the difference too.
