What are the Arrows on my Human Design Chart?
LaVeena B. Archers, PhD explains the arrows of the Human Design Variable: the four Left/Right orientations that shape how you digest food and information, and why misapplying them without guidance can do real damage.
If you’ve ever looked at your Human Design chart and noticed small arrows near your Sun, Earth, and Lunar Node symbols, you’ve already met the Variable without necessarily knowing what those arrows are doing there. I teach this material as a Differentiation Degree practitioner and Variable teacher, and it’s the layer of the chart people are usually most surprised to learn exists.
Sixteen Orientations, Not One-Size-Fits-All
Each arrow points Left or Right, and each is read from a different position: your Design Sun/Earth, your Design Nodes, your Personality Sun/Earth, and your Personality Nodes. Four positions, four arrows, each independently Left or Right. Combine them and you get sixteen possible Variable groupings, plotted on a grid with Personality across the top and Design down the side. Find your own four letters, plot yourself on the grid, and you’ll notice something else: whoever else lands in your exact square shares real cognitive ground with you, a kind of family within your Type that goes deeper than the aura mechanics most people learn first.
Ra called these sixteen groupings different paths of enlightenment, and the word that matters most in that phrase is cognitive. Cognitive is the sensory, mental process underneath conscious thought, how you actually take in and process experience, distinct from how you’re built to act, not what’s visible on the surface. Where Strategy and Authority are about Type, how you’re built to act, the arrows are about Awareness, how you’re built to think and take in the world. That makes the Variable its own layer of the chart entirely, worth understanding no matter your Type.
Why Some People Have to Slow Down First
There’s a specific group of Variable combinations where I ask people to slow down before experimenting: anyone with a passive brain-body system. If that’s you, you were homogenized from birth, for roughly the first seven years of life, around how you took in food and how you took in life more broadly, and that conditioning runs deep. This is one of the few places where I’d make an exception to the general rule of simply experimenting with Strategy and Authority for a year. I ask people studying this material to give it at least six months, and ideally to sleep alone for a year before drawing firm conclusions, though I don’t hold anyone to strict rules I can’t verify.
I came into this work a little too soon myself. I found Human Design in September 2012, had three different people mention my design to me before I ever got an actual reading, and once I did get one, I took the single sentence I was given and extrapolated it into a program I applied to myself without real guidance. It was a mistake, and it did damage to my body. I went from being financially stable to genuinely poor, because I tried to follow Strategy and Authority to the letter without understanding how my own brain-body system needed to come online first. I’m telling you this not as a cautionary footnote but as the reason this material has to be taught carefully.
Left and Right Brain-Body Systems: How You Process Food and Life
The first arrow, read from the top left of your chart, is your brain-body system, and it tells you whether you’re active or passive in how you process food, information, and life more generally. If it points right, like mine, you’re passive. If it points left, you’re active.
A left, active brain-body system has a genetic need for more fuel. Skipping meals, other than when the body is clearly signaling it doesn’t want food, damages cognition rather than clearing it. This system runs a busier brain, burning more energy and holding less water, because it’s actively linking, labeling, organizing, and categorizing what it takes in. It’s designed to be discriminative, seeking concentrated or periodic stimulation, the older, more survival-oriented model. If you have this design and you’re feeling fatigued mentally, a snack or something hot to drink can help.
A right, passive brain-body system runs on lower energy consumption, and skipping a meal is genuinely fine for a lot of people with this design. I sometimes don’t eat until one in the afternoon, and my brain is fine with that. This system holds more water, and over time, as you decondition from whatever eating pattern your family enforced growing up, your body can soften rather than harden. It’s a future-oriented system, less about focused stimulation and more about sensitivity: it’s easily overstimulated, and it thrives on going inward, into feeling and inner vision, rather than on concentrated external input.
Strategic and Receptive Minds
The second arrow that matters most day to day is your mind, and it works the same way: Left is strategic, Right is receptive.
A strategic mind is oriented toward being liberated from choice. It learns by focusing, reviewing what it’s missed, testing itself, and taking notes, and it always carries some kind of agenda, goal, or strategy. It discriminates by remembering specific things rather than storing everything indiscriminately. This was the seven-centered model for roughly ninety thousand years, and most of us were conditioned into some version of it regardless of our actual design.
A receptive mind works differently. It processes and expresses information it doesn’t consciously know it knows, without processing while it takes things in. It’s an open sponge, storing electromagnetic, auric, and felt information over time rather than filtering it as it arrives. If you have a receptive mind, you may notice that you walk away from a conversation, a podcast, or even a class unable to recall exactly what was said, and that’s not a flaw. A receptive mind isn’t designed to be the one that recalls information on demand. It’s designed for other people to draw from later, when they need it.
Beneath the Gate and Line: Color, Tone, and Base
The gate and line of an activation sit on the surface of the chart. Underneath them is a deeper architecture: color, then tone, then base. Tone is the layer of cognition that gives each of us our specific sensory capacity, and base is the entry frequency of the neutrino into what I call the crystal of consciousness, the layer that’s genuinely unique to you, life after life, even though the base entry frequency itself stays consistent across incarnations. This tonal architecture is where your individual differentiation actually lives. It isn’t abstract or decorative. It’s a real sensory capacity, and when it’s online, it’s what lets you offer something to other people that’s authentically sourced rather than borrowed.
When that tonal frequency comes into alignment, something specific happens: the magnetic monopole is able to hold body and mind together in a felt sense of wholeness, rather than the two functioning as if they’re separate. That alignment doesn’t necessarily make life easier. It changes how life feels while you’re living it. For a Projector like me, whose cognition runs through feeling, that shift is audible in a very literal sense; you can hear it in the aliveness of someone’s voice once they’re actually speaking from their own frequency instead of performing someone else’s.
Why Misalignment Here Is Costly
When someone isn’t operating in alignment with their actual brain-body system and mind orientation, the effect isn’t cosmetic. It cascades: the body can’t orient correctly, cognition suffers, motivation drifts off track, and over time it affects longevity, work effectiveness, and financial stability. This is one of the reasons I don’t teach the Variable as a quick add-on. It’s foundational enough that getting it wrong, the way I did early on, has real consequences.
I want to be direct about something else here too: I am not the authority on you. I’m a certified Differentiation Degree practitioner and Variable teacher, and everything I share is information to experiment with through your own Strategy and Authority, never a rule to adopt because I said so. Whatever knowledge you take from this material is yours to test against your own decision-making process, not mine or Ra’s, to hand your authority over to.
The reason I emphasize this so strongly is that when your brain-body system and mind are working correctly together, you get clarity: what the Variable calls seeing, in the fullest sense, meaning clear perception of your own path rather than a borrowed one. When they’re not working correctly together, that clarity doesn’t arrive no matter how much willpower or discipline you throw at it, because the brain-body system has to come online first before the mind’s perception can be trusted. That ordering, body before mind, is easy to state and genuinely difficult to live, especially for anyone whose conditioning taught them to override the body’s signals in favor of what looked reasonable on paper.
Where to Go Deeper
This piece covers the surface layer of the Variable: brain-body system and mind. There’s a second layer underneath, tone and color, that refines it further, along with the nodal side of the chart, which governs environment and perspective rather than digestion and mind. Ra originally called this broader body of material the Design of Forms, and Human Design itself is a subset of it.
If you want to go through this material properly, with your exact birth time confirmed first, I teach it in small groups of four to six people across a guided sequence, spreading the four radical transformations out over multiple sessions rather than compressing everything into a single weekend. You can see the current format in Radical Transformation. For the full mechanical breakdown of what each arrow measures, how the four combine into sixteen possible families, and how they connect to the Primary Health System and Rave Psychology readings, see the complete reference: The Human Design Variable.
