The Channel of Judgement Gate 58 and Gate 18

The 18-58 Channel of Judgment, a design of insatiability. Gate 18 corrects what is spoiled, Gate 58 supplies the vitality, and why the judgment has to be invited.

Think of the gods on Mount Olympus, up there bickering among themselves and judging the humans below. That is the realm of the 18-58 Channel of Judgment, and I have always described it as the channel of correct bitching. The bitching is not the problem. Whether it is correct is the whole question.

What the channel is made of

The 18-58 belongs to the Collective Understanding, or logic, circuit, and all collective circuitry carries the keynote of sharing. This channel is a design of insatiability: the drive to correct and perfect things, to work on what has been spoiled.

Gate 18, in the Spleen, is the correction: the instinctive awareness of what has been spoiled and what needs fixing.

Gate 58, in the Root, is the Joyous. It carries the drive, the pressure and the vitality to do something about it. People forget that it is a love gate. Underneath the critique is “I love you, and together let us make a more beautiful realm.” Let us make this world more perfect, more wonderful, more joyous, more alive. The 58 is my own unconscious activation, so I know this gate from the inside.

Correct and incorrect bitching

When the judgment stays collective, aimed at patterns that affect everyone, it does its job. When it goes personal and uninvited, it curdles. You get nitpicky, and then you get the questions: why are you so bitchy, why are you so judgmental, why are you always fault-finding?

That was my second husband’s complaint about me, that I was always trying to correct him and change things about him. In the not-self, the 58 says “I love you, let me fix that in you.” Offered without recognition and without an invitation, that is incorrect bitching.

Where the gates sit in the wheel

Gate 18 sits in the quarter of Duality, which is about relationships. This is why the first people we turn our correction on tend to be our mother and father. At some point a child sees that the parents are human, that they might lie or misspeak or get things wrong, and the fear that comes with that recognition is the 18. Grown up and lived well, it becomes the capacity to stand up for basic human rights in service of better relationships.

Gate 58 runs through the quarter of Mutation, driving toward perfection on the material plane, and it belongs to the stream of taste. It sends the love of life up to the Spleen for cleansing. It is the gate of vitality, the pressure for the evolution of life in the name of the love of life, and the root of the art of mastery. It feeds the 16-48 Channel of Talent with the logical quality of creativity.

Gates 58 and 52 are the only adrenaline gates tied to the logical process. They sit opposite each other on the wheel, which is how we know they form the arms of a cross.

The job description

Recognizing when correction is necessary is the job of this channel. Your judgment only arrives when there is something to be dissatisfied with. One of my mentors, Darshana, has this channel, and she puts it this way: if things were not broken, if nothing needed fixing, she would not have a job.

The correction is impersonal. Collective logic is about making sure the pattern works, and challenging it when it does not: challenging mothers, fathers, teachers, the government, the whole planet if that is what the pattern requires. It is not about correcting individuals.

My husband and I both carry this awareness. When we watch a movie I am picking apart the editing and the storyline, and he has his own eye for what could be fixed out in the world.

Living it well

Everyone with this channel is pressured to notice what is broken and what could be perfected. When that evaluation is uninvited, or when it is aimed at a person rather than a pattern, people experience you as hypercritical, and the result over time is bitterness, which is the Projector not-self theme.

The joy in this design is being invited to share the judgment: what can be improved, what can be corrected, what can be challenged, so that the world becomes a more wonderful place.
