Every activated gate in a chart sits at one of six lines, and the line is usually the first detail an analyst learns to read after the gate itself. It is also where most line study stops. In the spring of 2008 Ra gave six lectures on the lines, one line per lecture, and he spent them underneath the surface: on the number theme that carries down from the Line into the Color, Tone and Base below it, and on the different nuance each value takes on the Personality side and the Design side of the same chart. Each lecture follows one number through the layers. The 1 looks for a solid foundation, the 2 carries a deeply specialized talent and waits for something specific, the 3 discovers through trial and error, the 4 needs a secure environment and draws its power from its network, the 5 lives with projection and reputation, and the 6 moves through a three-stage life that turns at the Kiron Return. Along the way Ra ties the numbers to Color motivation, to Tone, and to the Profiles that carry them, so a line becomes a pattern you can follow through a whole design.
That is why it belongs in Level I. Chart analysis at this level asks students to keynote lines in context, and a line keynote is only as good as the analyst's sense of what the number means everywhere it appears. Once you have heard the 3 as a theme that repeats in the 3rd Color and the 3rd Tone, a 3rd line in someone's Sun reads differently, and the Design side and the Personality side of the same number start to sound like two distinct voices.
Jovian published the transcript as a digital book for newcomers, and the material is pitched so that someone new to Color and Tone can follow it. It works well next to the Rave I'Ching and the Line Companion, which Level I already uses for the 384 lines, and it gives a first taste of substructure without asking for full Variable study. The 6th line lecture also sets up the Kiron Return recording for anyone heading toward Level II.
