In Memory of Diane Keaton: The Fighter Nobody Read Correctly
Diane Keaton was a 6/2 Splenic Projector on the Left Angle Cross of Individualism, birth certificate in hand. The same cross and the same profile as Robert Duvall, and a conscious Sun in the Gate of the Fighter, on the line whose fierceness gets mistaken for something else.

Diane Keaton died October 11, 2025, in Santa Monica, California. She was 79. Her family said she died of pneumonia, and the death certificate gave primary bacterial pneumonia with nothing else contributing. She was born Diane Hall, in Los Angeles, and took her mother’s maiden name when she joined Actors’ Equity.
She is the second person in this series on the Left Angle Cross of Individualism, and the second with a 6/2 profile. The first was Robert Duvall, whose piece I drafted a few months ago and titled around a man who never signed on to anything. They share the cross exactly, gate for gate. They also, as it happens, share The Godfather.
Her record is AA: January 5, 1946, 2:49 AM, Los Angeles, California, birth certificate in hand. Computed on this site’s own engine, rebuilt independently in Maia Mechanics, no disagreement between them.

The Gate of the Fighter
Her conscious Sun sits in Gate 38, the Fighter, on the sixth line. Our own page for that line says the sixth line must clear up misread intentions, because its fierceness is often mistaken for hostility.
I do not think there is a better one-sentence description of Diane Keaton’s public life available anywhere.
She spent fifty years being read as flustered. The hats, the trailing sentences, the “la-di-da,” the apologetic laugh, an entire cultural shorthand for a woman who could not quite finish a thought. Underneath that was a person who was, by the evidence, one of the most stubborn figures of her generation: who refused to marry anyone, ever, including three of the most pursued men in Hollywood; who took the part in Looking for Mr. Goodbar the year after Annie Hall made her America’s sweetheart; who spent twenty years on the board of the Los Angeles Conservancy fighting demolition orders. Gate 38 is the gate that fights for what is worth fighting for. Line 6 is the version of it that keeps having to explain that it was never being difficult.
Her conscious Earth is Gate 39, Provocation, also on the sixth line, which our page gives as the troubleshooter who provokes exactly where a problem needs exposing. Both conscious lights in the Root, both on the sixth line, both about pressure applied on purpose. The nervous comedy was the surface. The chart underneath it is two gates of sustained confrontation.
Splenic authority, and the hesitation
Her design Sun is Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, on the second line, and her authority is Splenic. Gate 57 sits in the Spleen and is the intuition gate itself, so her deciding mechanism and her design Sun are the same equipment.
The second line of Gate 57 is the one that knows and hesitates, and whose lesson is that clarity kept to yourself helps nobody.
Splenic authority speaks once, in the moment, at conversational volume, and does not repeat itself. A person built this way has the fastest and least explicable knowing in the system and no argument to back it up. Now put that on the second line, the line that would rather be left alone and has to be called out of the house. What comes out is a person who knows immediately, cannot justify it, and hedges the delivery.
That is the Keaton speech pattern. The stammer, the qualifiers, the sentence that starts over twice before it lands. It reads on screen as charming indecision. Mechanically it is a splenic hit arriving instantly and a second line declining to defend it. Her design Earth is Gate 51, Shock, on the second line, which knows when to step back from a blast and let it spend itself. Between those two placements you have a woman who saw things coming, said so obliquely if at all, and got out of the way.
The 6/2, and the houses
A 6/2 profile lives in three parts. Trial and error to around thirty, then two decades on the roof watching rather than participating, then a late authority that arrives without being asked for. The second line underneath it is the hermit, which needs to be left alone and needs to be drawn out by other people who see something in it before it sees it in itself.
For a Projector, whose whole strategy is to wait for recognition and the invitation, a 2nd line is a double dose of the same instruction. Nothing in this chart is built to go and get it.
Her career reads that way. She did not audition her way into The Godfather; Coppola brought her in. Woody Allen cast her in Play It Again, Sam on Broadway in 1969 and then in eight films. Warren Beatty put her in Reds. Every defining role of her life arrived as an invitation from someone who had already seen it, which is the Projector mechanic operating correctly for fifty years.
And the roof period produced something most obituaries treated as a hobby. She began photographing vanishing hotel interiors and published Reservations in 1980. In 1982 she bought the 1928 Lloyd Wright Samuel-Novarro house in Los Feliz and restored it. She served on the board of the Los Angeles Conservancy for close to twenty years, bought and saved a run of Spanish Colonial Revival houses, and published California Romantica in 2007. A sixth line on the roof is supposed to be observing and taking things in rather than performing. She spent hers looking at buildings nobody else was looking at, and then made herself the reason several of them still exist.
A Split, and the three bridges
She had Split Definition. One area joins her Ajna and Throat through Curiosity. The other joins her G Center, Spleen and Root through Perfected Form and Judgment. The two halves do not touch, and Maia names the gates that would bridge them as 20, 16 and 13.
A Split looks for its bridge in other people, and is drawn to whoever supplies it. Hers is the split between the part that talks and the part that knows, which is a precise mechanical description of the gap her whole screen persona lived inside.
Judgment, Root to Spleen, is the correction channel: the drive to find the flaw in a pattern and fix it, powered by an instinct for what is not right yet. On most charts I read that as perfectionism about work. On hers it was also literal. She looked at a condemned 1920s house and saw what was wrong with the decision to knock it down.
Saturn Return, July 11, 1975
The Saturn Return arrives around twenty-nine and audits the structure against the design. Hers fell on July 11, 1975, at 29.51, under the Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings (53/54 | 42/32).

Natal chart against the July 11, 1975 Saturn Return transit, age 29: after Love and Death, before Annie Hall.
There is no event on July 11 itself. The window runs three and a half years either side of it, and it brackets her tightly on both. Love and Death had opened that June, her fifth film with Allen and the last before the one that changed everything. She had done both Godfather films. Annie Hall would begin shooting the following year and open in April 1977, winning her the Academy Award for Best Actress and turning her name into a costume other people wore.
Love and Death opened on June 10, 1975, one month before the exact date. Both Godfather films sit on the near side of the window and the Academy Award sits on the far side of it, in April 1978. A cross of Beginnings over a Saturn Return at twenty-nine, in the last quiet summer before the role that fixed her public identity for fifty years, is a tidy piece of timing. I will not claim more for it than that.
Uranus Opposition, December 13, 1984
The Uranus Opposition falls around forty and breaks open what has set too hard. Hers fell on December 13, 1984, at 38.94, under the Left Angle Cross of Confrontation (26/45 | 6/36).

Natal chart against the December 13, 1984 Uranus Opposition transit, age 38: Mrs. Soffel opened that same month.
1984 gave her two films. The Little Drummer Girl opened in October and was badly reviewed. Mrs. Soffel, in which she plays a warden’s wife who abandons her family for a condemned prisoner, opened on December 26, thirteen days after the transit, and was well received.
The calcified thing by 1984 was Annie Hall. She had spent seven years being asked to be a lovable neurotic in a waistcoat, and the two films she made that year are both refusals of it, one of which failed and one of which worked. A cross of Confrontation sitting over the fortnight Mrs. Soffel opened is the sort of coincidence I have stopped apologizing for pointing out, and the direction of her career afterward, toward difficult women rather than charming ones, is the part that is documented rather than interpretive.
Chiron Return, October 14, 1996
The Chiron Return comes around fifty. Hers fell on October 14, 1996, at 50.77, with Chiron in Gate 57, her own design Sun gate, under the Right Angle Cross of Maya (32/42 | 62/61).

Natal chart against the October 14, 1996 Chiron Return transit, age 50: the year she became a mother.
This is the cleanest hit in the piece.
In 1996, at fifty, having never married and having said for years that she did not expect to have children, Diane Keaton adopted her daughter Dexter. She adopted her son Duke five years later at fifty-five. The same year brought The First Wives Club, which opened that September and was the biggest commercial hit of her career, and Marvin’s Room, which brought her a third Academy Award nomination.
A Chiron Return is where a person stops performing a role and occupies it, and for a sixth line it is the descent from the roof into the third act. Hers arrived in the year she became a parent for the first time, at exactly the age the cycle lands, having spent the whole roof period being the most famous single woman in American film.
Chiron returning to Gate 57, her own design Sun and the seat of her authority, is a detail I would put in front of a student. The gate whose second line knows and hesitates, with Chiron sitting on it, in the year she stopped hesitating about the largest decision available to her.
Second Saturn Return, August 19, 2004
The second Saturn Return arrives around fifty-eight and asks what you mean to leave. Hers fell on August 19, 2004, at 58.62, under the Right Angle Cross of Contagion (29/30 | 8/14).

Natal chart against the August 19, 2004 second Saturn Return transit, age 58: eight months after Something’s Gotta Give.
Nothing is dated to August 19, 2004, and I am going to leave that gap open rather than fill it.
What sits either side of it: Something’s Gotta Give opened in December 2003, gave her a fourth Academy Award nomination in January 2004 and a Golden Globe, and made a fifty-seven-year-old woman the romantic lead of a studio hit, which was not a thing the industry was doing at the time. She spent the years after it raising two children she had adopted in her fifties and buying houses nobody else would save.
There is one more thing in this chart worth noticing, and it is the sort of detail that only shows up when you run the whole series. The cycle cross on her second Saturn Return is the Right Angle Cross of Contagion, 29/30 | 8/14. That is Robert Redford’s natal cross, gate for gate. Two people who never made a film together, one carrying as a lifetime what the other was passing through for a season.
What her design leaves behind
Duvall’s piece was about a man on this cross who never signed on to anything. Hers is about a woman on the same cross who never signed anything either, and the difference between them is the whole argument for reading charts carefully.
He was a Generator with a motor and a sacral yes. She was a Projector with no motor at all, waiting to be seen. Same cross, same profile, opposite equipment, and both of them ended up with a life that refused the standard shape: no marriage that lasted, no institutional membership, no committee.
The Left Angle Cross of Individualism is a design whose theme only completes through contact with other people, which is why the loneliness of it is real and why both of them kept working with the same collaborators for decades. What she did with hers was refuse every available template for a woman’s life in public, one at a time, in the mildest possible voice, and then adopt two children at fifty and fifty-five and spend her last twenty years making sure some buildings survived her.
Gate 38, line 6. The fierceness gets mistaken for something else. It took most people about fifty years to notice she had been fighting the entire time.
Her last Solar Return, and the day she died
She died on October 11, 2025, in Los Angeles, nine months past her seventy-ninth birthday, after paramedics took her from her home to a nearby hospital. The date, the place and the pneumonia are in Variety’s report on her death certificate; no account on the public record puts a clock time on her death, and where no time was recorded, this series says so rather than inventing one. The missing hour takes nothing from what follows: a Solar Return runs on birth data alone, and hers is the AA certificate this whole post opened with, timed to 2:49 in the morning.
Her last Solar Return, the chart for that seventy-ninth birthday, runs into a border. This series computes each return at the birthday’s own clock time, a convention that holds when the transiting Sun sits well inside the natal Sun’s gate at that moment. Hers had already left. Her Sun occupies the sixth and final line of Gate 38, and January 2025 fell at the wide end of the calendar’s leap-cycle drift, the same-clock sky running most of a line of the wheel ahead of where it stood over Los Angeles in 1946, far enough that the Sun crossed out of the Fighter hours before January 5 began. A return that has crossed a border gets pinned instead to the exact minute the Sun retraces the degree on her birth certificate, a minute that fell the day before her calendar birthday, and a return pinned there hands her Sun and Earth back to Gate 38 and Gate 39, the Fighter and Provocation, to the line, one final time. That much is definitional. Pinned in Maia Mechanics, her return falls on the morning of January 4, 2025, and the sky around it kept insisting on her own themes: transiting Venus in Gate 55 met the Gate 39 her conscious Earth holds, completing the 55-39 Channel of Emoting; transiting Neptune in Gate 36 met her Gate 35 for the 35-36 Channel of Transitoriness; a transiting node in Gate 25 reached the Gate 51 her design Earth holds for the 25-51 Channel of Initiation; and the sky carried her own 11-56 Channel of Curiosity, the storyteller’s wiring she holds whole natally, complete between Mercury and Mars with no help from her at all.
One more twinning belongs on the pile. Robert Duvall shares her January 5 birthday and her Sun in the same line of the same gate, and his final return runs into this identical border. The two charts this series keeps holding up against each other, same cross, same profile, same Godfather, end on the same technicality: a Sun so late in the Fighter that even the calendar misreads where it stands.
