Hexagram 42, Increase, the Gate of Duration

Every transit day carries its own flavor, and the day this video was recorded had a particularly poignant one: the Sun sat in Gate 42, sixth line, under the Left Angle Cross of Limitation. Gate 42 is often called the gate of death, not in a morbid sense, but as the gate that governs wrapping up a cycle of experience. In this video I walk through all six lines of Hexagram 42, Increase, then follow the transit down into where that energy was grounding for the day: the 42/32 pairing seen through the Nodes. Along the way I bring in a few personal stories, including my own south node placement and what it has shown me about nurturing others through cycles of growth.

Gate 42 is about finishing, not starting

Gate 42 belongs to the Channel of Maturation, which connects it to Gate 53 in the Root. I mention in the video that Ra Uru Hu, over thousands of readings, found that a striking number of people carrying this channel worked as midwives. That detail matters because it points at what the channel is actually for: it is a design of balanced, cyclical development, and it governs the completion side of any cycle of experience, not the initiation side. Gate 53 is where a cycle of experience begins. Gate 42 is where it is supposed to end.

That distinction is the whole engine of this gate. People with Gate 42 activated sometimes enter into something that took a great deal of energy to get into, and then they cannot get out of it. They cannot let it go, cannot throw it away, cannot finish, particularly when they did not enter that cycle of experience correctly in the first place. Growth, as I say in the video, is something that has to be limited. Think about what happens to a cell that never stops growing. There has to be an end, a limit, a close, before the next cycle can begin.

Gate 42 sits in the Sacral Center, which makes it one of the sacral power and wealth gates. When this gate is activated in a chart with an undefined Sacral Center (as mine is), it has a particular gift: it can help a person read whether the process they are part of is actually going to bring growth, or whether it needs to be brought to a close. When the Sacral Center is defined, that same gate becomes part of the generator’s sacral response, the “yes” or “no” that tells a generator whether their energy is moving toward or away from a given activity or process.

The six lines of Hexagram 42, Increase

The I Ching hexagram behind Gate 42 is called Increase, and its six lines trace a progression from scattered growth to shared, mature growth. Working through the Ra Uru Hu material line by line:

• Line 1 is diversification: growth through expansion, or growth that expands too far and tips into decadence.
• Line 2 is the unseen line, the natural expression of growth through identification, the power of growing by participating in trends, and its shadow of growth that stalls out reacting to trends or change.
• Line 3 is chance: trial and error, happenstance, circumstance. In times of increase we learn that mistakes are a natural part of the process, and the power to accept mistakes is itself part of growth, even as those mistakes can also feed moodiness and caution.
• Line 4 is the middleman line: the maturity to bring growth through mediation, or, on the shadow side, a lack of maturity where the power to harmonize distorts mediation and limits growth instead.
• Line 5 is self-actualization: growth that is self-fulfilling and naturally leads to influence, or, on the other side, inner growth that empowers reclusiveness. I mention in the video that this is my own line, and that reclusiveness is a real and familiar experience for me.
• Line 6, the line the Sun occupied that day, is nurturing: the natural and instinctive nurturing of others, the power to share the process of growth with others. Its shadow is the refusal to share the benefits of growth with others.

The sixth line carries a particular quality of its own. The sixth line is never about what’s unseen (that’s the first line), what’s visible (the second), what we bump into by chance (the third), or connection through influence or strangers. The sixth line is about what’s next. It looks down the line of the circuitry it belongs to and out toward the next gate on the wheel, which in this case is Gate 3, Ordering, a process of synthesis that moves beyond where line six stands.

Exaltation and detriment on this line

Each line of a hexagram carries a planetary exaltation and detriment, and I go through both for line six of Gate 42 in the video. When the Moon sits in this gate and line, it exalts the nurturing quality described above: a natural and instinctive nurturing of others, the power to share the process of growth with others. When Saturn sits there instead, it detriments the line into a restrictive and malefic materialism that is self-alienating and encourages aggression, in other words, the refusal to share the benefits of growth with others.

Where the energy grounds: Gate 32 and the sixth line of tranquility

The video’s transit that day had the Sun’s energy grounding into Gate 32, the gate of continuity, also on its own sixth line. That line is about tranquility, the need to calmly face impermanence, because nothing in this world endures. Everything dies, everything comes to a close. Pluto exalts this line as an underlying acceptance of change that may or may not lead to tranquility, an instinctive awareness that accepts change and transformation. Neptune detriments it into impermanence experienced as proof of meaninglessness, with depression, delusion, and in the extreme, self-destruction as its attendant manifestations. That combination, I explain in the video, was part of why a significant share of the neutrino stream grounding into the earth that day was carrying a heavy, sixth-line quality.

The 42/32 pairing from the Nodes

Gate 42 and Gate 32 also show up together as a Nodal pairing, distinct from the Gate 42/Gate 53 channel described above. At the BG5 Business Institute we pulled Ra Uru Hu’s storyline teaching on the environments into a resource, and I read directly from those notes on the south node Gate 42 to north node Gate 32 storyline in the video. That unconscious storyline is described as full of uncertainties, threats, and risks: a deep, abstract process in the Sacral where the not-self can pour massive amounts of energy into entering a process, believing growth will be the result, only to discover it was actually a retrogressive process. The importance of this storyline, as I frame it, is learning to make the decision to enter into the right experiences, ones that are genuinely fulfilling and satisfying, rather than chasing things that will not serve the growth process.

I also share, for the first time on record in this video, a piece of a different resource: a transcription my team put together of a recording where Ra Uru Hu taught the 32 personality node environments from the conscious perspective. From my own conscious personality nodal environment, I read through the description of the Gate 42 as it looks outward. As the notes describe it, Gate 42 marks the end in the beginning-middle-end of a cycle of experience. Through the nodes, it becomes an ability to see that everything has an end, and to see how difficult it can be for the people around you to finish what they start. One of the gifts of this gate, looking out into the world, is a perceptiveness about the vitality and life force available in the generators around you, an instinctive sense of who is or is not giving their full energy to something.

Personal stories: nodes, nurturing, and reading energy in others

I connect this material to my own chart in a few ways in the video. Both of my south nodes carry a nurturing theme: Gate 27, nourishment, the gate of caring, sits as my unconscious south node alongside Gate 42 in the sixth line, nurturing, in the state of growth. I trace that thread back to one of my earliest jobs, working as a scuba dive master and taking small groups of people on underwater adventures, pointing out details along the way and nurturing brand-new divers through the experience. I note that I am doing something structurally similar now: bringing people who are completely new to Human Design through their own cycle of growth as an analyst and guide.

I also describe how this shows up with my daughter, a highly defined manifesting generator with emotional authority and three sacral channels. When she is paying lip service to something rather than actually having the energy for it, I can feel it in my own body before she says it outright, and I have learned to check by restating what I heard her say and asking if she actually has the energy for it. Because she carries a split definition, I have found it works better to sit down and do things together with her, rather than expecting her to complete something independently.

A practical takeaway

The throughline of this video is that finishing well is its own skill, distinct from and just as necessary as starting well. If Gate 42 or the Channel of Maturation shows up anywhere in your own chart, or if you recognize yourself in the sixth line’s pull toward “what’s next,” the practical piece to sit with is this: notice where you have been unable to let go of something you entered into for the wrong reasons, and notice where you are actually available to share the process of growth with someone else rather than holding it to yourself. Gate 42 asks you to close a cycle honestly before the next one opens, and line six specifically asks whether you are willing to nurture someone else through their own version of that same process.
