How are we designed to See? An Introduction to Human Design's Personality Nodes of the Moon

This is where Ra began when he first started teaching Human Design: the Cross of Life, made of the Sun above, the Earth below, and the two nodes of the Moon. Looking only at the personality side, those four points form a basic cross configuration.

A useful way to keep them straight is that the bodygraph faces the node pointing up. That one is your future, your direction, and your seeing. The other side is the past.

The nodes are not objects

Every other imprint in your chart is a physical thing. The Sun, the Earth, the Moon and the planets are all objects standing in a gateway, like an outstretched hand reaching across to create genetic imprinting in the bodygraph.

The nodes do not belong in that category. They are positions in space, not physical bodies. If you have not studied the system it is easy to assume otherwise, but the nodal position is derived from how the Moon behaves in its rotation around the Earth, combined with the position of the Sun. Ra described it as the apogee and perigee of the Moon’s ecliptic. The North Node sits at one end, the South Node at the other, and both are only positions.

They also move differently. The Sun and Earth travel counter-clockwise around the wheel. The nodes travel clockwise, and slowly, taking around three and a half months to cross a single gate.

The I and the We

Your Sun and Earth carry roughly 70% of the neutrino information imprinting you. That is your life’s work, the archetypal theme of your purpose and the core essence you broadcast. Think of it as the I. On the personality side it is who I think I am; on the design side it is what I be, which is what other people see in me that I am not aware of.

The nodes are the We.

Picture the solar system as a single cell. The information reaching you from the Sun is what you need to function inside that cell. The nodes are not part of the cell at all. They are the cell’s capacity to make contact with the next cell, which is what Ra called transcellular information.

Through those two windows comes information from outside the solar system entirely: a direct line of sight out into the star field, the stellar background frequency. It is not inner information.

Why that matters mechanically

The planets each filter what passes through them. Each stands in its gateway and lends its own flavor: the Moon as driving force, Mercury as communication and thinking, and so on. I use the analogy of coffee blends in my analyst training, because that is what the planets do to the solar information passing through them.

Only through the nodes do you receive stellar frequency from beyond the solar cell without any planetary object filtering or flavoring it.

There is an anomaly worth knowing. Sometimes a chart has a planetary object sitting right on a node. When that happens, the information arriving from outside is being filtered after all. Ra called that a limitation, and it also points toward a karmic fulfillment of purpose, which I find genuinely fascinating to work with.

Everything here is about seeing

The nodes are how you are attuned to what you see. Ra was direct about the stakes: it is not simply a question of being correct in terms of your profile in this life. You cannot arrive at correctness of purpose unless you also see correctly, and it is only through the nodes that you see at all.

Your conscious nodal configuration is a completely unique way of seeing. Like the Sun and Earth, the nodes are an exact opposition, and what sits there varies enormously: sometimes planets that filter, sometimes channels, sometimes hanging or dormant potentials, sometimes definition. Any of those combinations changes the imprint.

Which is why two people can be told the same true thing and only one of them can see it.
