What is Soul, Spirit, Mind, Body in Human Design?

A companion breakdown of a Rave Cartography class on the personality and design crystals, the conditioned mind, and how definition, openness, and spirit consciousness fit together in the nine-centered body graph.

Human Design gives you a language for four words that get thrown around loosely everywhere else: soul, spirit, mind, and body. In the video above, an overview of the Rave Cartography curriculum, I walk through where each of those actually lives in the body graph mechanics, why the voice inside your head is not the authority it pretends to be, and how the two crystals that hold your design together explain a lot about why you feel like a passenger in your own life. This article pulls those pieces into one place so you can sit with them apart from the class pacing.

The Two Crystals: What Soul and Body Mean Mechanically

Human Design describes two crystals of consciousness that make up your design. The personality crystal is affiliated with self-reflected consciousness, the part of you that some traditions would call the soul. It is the piece that reincarnates life after life, the eternal witness of whatever human movie you happen to be living through this time around. The design crystal belongs to the earth. It sits together with the magnetic monopole, which is located at gate 2, and it is what builds the physical body.

At conception, these two crystals separate and begin the work of building the form you are walking around in. The monopole is what holds personality to body as you move through space and time. It is also, in a very literal mechanical sense, what creates the illusion that you are separate from the totality of everything else. Together the two crystals create the form, and the invitation of this system is to surrender to that form as a nine-centered human being rather than fight it.

That distinction matters because it tells you something practical: your body and your personality are not the same system running on the same clock. The design crystal is building and operating the vehicle. The personality crystal is riding along, watching. When you understand that from the start, a lot of the confusion about who is actually “you” starts to loosen.

The Voice in Your Head Is Not Your Authority

The single most important idea in the class is this: the conditioned mind voice inside your head is not the sum total of what you are. It cannot be, because you are so much more than that voice.

Human Design gives you the chance to develop what gets called passenger consciousness, the practice of observing your body and its life rather than trying to force what you think should happen into being. The moment you believe the mind’s running commentary, the constant narration of I wish this were different, I should have done that, this isn’t fair, you become contaminated by every open, undefined part of your design. That inner critic isn’t a neutral reporter. It is built out of everything you have absorbed from other people, from transits moving through you, from a lifetime of conditioning you never consented to.

Because the mind (the Ajna, in body graph terms) is structured to be open and receptive, it takes in information from whoever is sitting next to you and from whatever is moving through the sky at any given moment. The trouble starts when you internalize that voice and mistake it for your own. Letting go of what is simply passing through you, and surrendering instead to the body’s own beingness, is what produces a genuinely different experience of life. It also produces a body that is more relaxed, because it is no longer bracing against a constant undercurrent of blame, shame, guilt, and fault that the mind manufactures on its own.

This does not happen overnight. It takes time to loosen the mind’s grip, time for the body to settle, time to get comfortable in your own skin. There’s no reason to rush that process. The work is simply to keep practicing being the passenger, observing life rather than narrating it.

Definition and Openness: Where You’re Reliable, Where You’re Still in School

Once you understand that the mind is not the authority, the next layer is understanding what actually is reliable in your design. Every center in the body graph has a binary function: it is either defined in you or it is not, and every center can function healthfully or unhealthfully in either state.

A defined center is one that is consistently colored in for you. It transmits or broadcasts information steadily, which means it behaves the same way whether you are having a great day or a rough one. An undefined, or open, center is a place of receptivity. It picks up and amplifies whatever is moving through the people and transits around you, which is why those same centers can feel inconsistent or moody from one hour to the next.

Gates work the same way, as portals into and out of those centers. A gate can be activated whether the center it belongs to is defined or open. When a gate sits in an undefined center, that is where you are, in the language of the class, going to school. It is specific wisdom you are learning through repeated exposure, not something you were born already knowing how to run. You can absolutely offer real wisdom to other people from that open place, once you stop trying to force it into being something fixed and dependable inside yourself. The wisdom is inconsistent by design. It shows up when it shows up.

This is why so much of Human Design study comes back to the same question: what is fixed, defined, and trustworthy in me, and what is open, receptive to conditioning, and better used as a place to observe? Living Your Design lays the groundwork for recognizing your centers. Rave Cartography goes further into the mechanics of each function, the circuitry, the type and strategy, and the profile, which is roughly ten hours on centers, more than fourteen on channel circuitry and authority, about ten on type and strategy, and a final stretch on the profiles that shape how you show up publicly and fulfill your life’s purpose.

Spirit, Instinct, and Waking Up the Nine-Centered Being

Part of what the class walks through is humankind’s shift from a seven-centered field of consciousness into the nine-centered awareness the body graph actually reflects. Waking up to that nine-centered reality is described as a process of claiming your own sovereignty, becoming your own authority rather than continuing to source decisions from the collective mind field everyone was operating from before.

Inside that nine-centered structure, certain centers carry what could be called the spirit and instinctual layer of the system: your primal survival instincts and your emotional intelligence. These functions run underneath conscious thought entirely. They are not something the mind reasons its way into. That is part of why the mind is such an unreliable narrator for decisions in the first place: your awareness of a thought or feeling arrives after the deeper biochemical process that actually produced it. The class points to research on this exact gap, the finding that what we think, say, and do is set in motion before conscious awareness catches up to it, and that the sense of having freely chosen something in the moment can be something closer to a story the brain tells itself after the fact.

That is not a reason for despair. It is the reason Strategy and Authority exist as a system to experiment with in the first place. If the mind is reconstructing its reasons after the body has already responded, then the practical move is to let the body’s own reliable, defined signals lead, and let the mind do what it is actually good at: recognizing patterns after the fact, noticing your own not-self behavior once it has already happened, rather than trying to pre-approve every choice before it’s made.

From Not-Self Distortion to Outer Authority

The not-self conditioning field is what happens when you make decisions from an open, undefined center as though it were reliable. Bitterness, resentment, frustration, disappointment: these are the frequency you give off when a decision has been sourced from something that was only ever meant to be received, not acted from. Nobody handed you a manual for this as a child, which is exactly why the mind fills the gap with its own distorted mental strategies, all of them built on top of whatever is undefined in your particular design.

Every open center or function is also, without contradiction, a source of real value. This is what gets called outer authority: a differentiated perspective you can hand to someone else cleanly, without drama, agenda, or manipulation, once you’ve stopped trying to make it into a rule for yourself. The same openness that distorts your own decision-making becomes wisdom the moment it’s offered to someone who asked for it, rather than forced onto someone who didn’t.

Strategy and Authority function as the shield between those two outcomes. Without it, an activation in an open center amplifies and distorts, you overreact, and you misunderstand what’s happening as though it were personally about you. With it, the same activation can be met with waiting and a correct, external focus rather than internalized reaction. Instead of overreacting and misunderstanding, there is room for wisdom that comes from correct awareness of what’s actually happening outside you, rather than a story the mind is spinning on the inside.

The Practical Takeaway

None of this is meant to be taken on faith. The invitation across the whole class is to question the voice in your head and then actually test it against your own strategy and authority, rather than assuming either one is automatically right. Notice which of your centers are consistently defined for you and treat those as dependable. Notice which are open and stop expecting them to behave consistently, whether in yourself or in the people you’re closest to. And when you catch the mental narrator building a case, a should, a story about why this time it’s different, that’s the exact moment to pause and let your body’s own process answer instead.

Nobody stays anchored in that sovereign, self-authorized state permanently. It depends on your environment, who you’re with, how tired you are, and a dozen other factors that shift by the hour. What tends to change, the more time you spend practicing it, is how much ease, serendipity, and grace shows up in ordinary life, simply because fewer decisions are being made from a voice that was never built to run the show in the first place.

If this framework is one you want to go deeper into, the full Rave Cartography class covers each of these functions center by center, works through the circuitry and profiles in far more detail, and is part of the IHDS-certified coursework path that continues on toward analyst training for anyone drawn to study it professionally.
