View and Perspective
Perspective is how you are designed to see, before you have thought anything about what you are looking at. Two people standing in the same room are receiving different rooms, and neither of them chose which. It is read from the Color beneath your Personality Nodes.
With Motivation it makes up the mind half of the Variable, the half covered by Rave Psychology rather than by PHS.
The six Views
The first three are the lower colors. They are personally integrated, pointed at learning and at the survivability of a life, and they are concerned with the material world in a direct way. The last three are upper colors and work transpersonally, which is a change of mode rather than a promotion.

Note what happens at 3 and 6. Power sits at the bottom, reading who is winning and where the leverage is, and Personal sits at the top, reading the outside world by looking inward first. They are harmonics of each other and they could hardly be less alike, which is why the pair is the most commonly misread of the three.
Why the Nodes decide what you see
The Sun and Earth are dependent variables. The Nodes are not. The nodal axis describes the path the body is walking through life, and the Sun and Earth only mean something in the context of that path: a fish makes no sense described apart from the water it is swimming in. What you are capable of seeing is a function of where you are standing while you look.
This is also why the Design Nodes give Environment and the Personality Nodes give Perspective. One is where you are, the other is what that position lets you see. The unconscious side is where you be. The conscious side is where you see.
Distraction
Perspective transfers the same way Motivation does, on the harmonic pairs 1 and 4, 2 and 5, 3 and 6, and when it does the result is called distraction. It is a quieter failure than most of the not-self, because a distracted View still produces a coherent picture of the world. It is a coherent picture of the wrong thing.
Someone designed for Probability who is seeing Possibility instead will find that everything looks equally likely, which makes prioritizing impossible and looks from the inside like being open-minded. Someone designed for Survival who is distracted into Wanting spends their attention on the gap rather than on what is holding the life up. Working out which of the two you are running is the point of distraction analysis, and it is the part of this material that changes anything.
This one matures late
Perspective and Environment are the two Transformations timed to the life cycles rather than available from the start. Both describe a path being walked, and before the Saturn Return at around 30 there is not enough path behind you for either to have become legible. If you are in your twenties, this material is worth understanding and is not worth reorganizing your life around. It continues to develop, and it becomes usable on the other side of that cycle.
Where it comes from in the chart
Perspective is a Color value, below the line, which is why it cannot be read off the bodygraph and why no free chart prints it as a label. It is the third of the four Transformations.

What is Perspective in Human Design?
Perspective, also called View, is one of the four Transformations. It describes how you are designed to see: the angle your awareness takes on the world before you have thought anything about it. It is read from the Color of your Personality Nodes, which puts it on the conscious side of the chart alongside Motivation.
What are the six Views?
Survival, Possibility, Power, Wanting, Probability and Personal, numbered one to six. The first three are the lower colors and are personally integrated, oriented toward learning and toward the survivability of a life. The last three are the upper colors and work transpersonally, which is a different mode rather than a more advanced version of the same one.
What is distraction?
Distraction is what Perspective does when you are not operating correctly. Each View slips into its harmonic, on the same pairs as Motivation: one and four, two and five, three and six. Someone designed to see Probability spends their life seeing Possibility instead, which sounds harmless and means every option looks equally live. Distraction analysis is the practical part of this material.
Why do the Nodes govern how I see?
Because the Sun and Earth are dependent variables and the Nodes are not. The Nodes describe the path the body is walking, and the Sun and Earth only mean anything in the context of that path. It is the difference between a fish and the water it is swimming in. Take the fish out and there is nothing left to describe. What you are able to see is a function of where you are standing.
Does Perspective matter before my Saturn Return?
Not much. Perspective and Environment are the two Transformations that mature late, because both describe a path being walked rather than a trait being held, and there is not enough path behind you at 25 for either to have become legible. Under 30 this material is worth knowing about and not worth organizing your life around. It keeps developing.
What is the difference between Perspective and Motivation?
Perspective is how you see; Motivation is why you move. They are the two halves of the mind side of the Variable and they depend on each other in one direction: seeing correctly is what makes correct motivation possible. If you are seeing through distraction, whatever you are then motivated to do is being aimed at something that is not there.
