In Memory of David Lynch: The Same Chart as Dolly Parton
David Lynch was a 4/6 Sacral Generator on the Right Angle Cross of Laws, born one day after Dolly Parton and carrying the same design down to the Sun and Earth lines. Two defined centers, one channel, and a working life that ran on a pulse nothing could put on a schedule.

David Lynch died January 16, 2025, in Los Angeles. He was 78. He had announced an emphysema diagnosis in August 2024, told People that November that he had known since 2020, and days before the end he was evacuated from his own home during the January 2025 fires. His family put it in his words rather than theirs: “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”
I came to his chart expecting to find something strange in it, because everything else about him was. What I found instead was a chart I already knew by heart, and had already written about last week from the other side.
His record is AA: January 20, 1946, 3:00 AM, Missoula, Montana, birth certificate in hand. I computed it on our own engine and then rebuilt it from scratch in Maia Mechanics, and the two agree on every line: Generator, Sacral Authority, 4/6, Single Definition, Right Angle Cross of Laws 4. No hedge to make.
| Type | Generator |
| Strategy | Wait to respond |
| Authority | Sacral |
| Profile | 4/6 |
| Definition | Single Definition |
| Cross | Right Angle Cross of Laws 4 (60/56 | 50/3) |
| Signature / Not-Self | Satisfaction / Frustration |
| Data | AA record, 3:00 AM MST, Missoula, MT |

David Lynch’s natal bodygraph, 4/6 Sacral Generator: Design and Personality, activated at birth. Two defined centers, one channel.
One day after Dolly
I published a piece on Dolly Parton last week. She was born January 19, 1946. He was born January 20, 1946, about seven and a half hours later on the clock, two thousand miles west. Their charts are the same chart.
I want to be exact about what that claim covers, because it is the kind of thing that sounds like astrology-column filler until you check it. Same Type, Generator. Same Authority, Sacral. Same profile, 4/6. Same Single Definition. Same Incarnation Cross, Right Angle Cross of Laws 4, and the same variant number, not just the same family. Same two defined centers, Sacral and Root, with every other center open. Same single channel, 3-60. Their conscious Sun sits in Gate 60 line 4 for both of them. Their conscious Earth sits in Gate 56 line 4 for both. Their design Sun sits in Gate 50 line 6, their design Earth in Gate 3 line 6.
Across all thirteen planetary activations on both the Personality and Design sides, every single one lands in the same gate for both of them. Four differ in line, and three of those four are the Moon and the two fastest inner planets, which is exactly where you would expect seven and a half hours to show up. Her Personality Moon is 59.1 and his is 59.6. Her design Moon is 12.5 and his is 15.4. That is the whole of the difference.
So here is a country singer from a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains and a surrealist from Missoula who made a film about a man with an eraser for a head, running identical mechanics. This is the single best argument I know against reading a chart as a personality test. A chart is the vehicle, not the driver. Two people can be handed the same vehicle and take it to places that share no roads.
Two centers, and nothing else
Almost every center in his bodygraph is open. Throat, Ajna, Head, G Center, Heart, Spleen, Solar Plexus: none of them defined. Only Sacral and Root carry consistent energy, and they carry it through one channel.
An open center is a receiver. It takes in and amplifies whatever is around it, which is also where you are most susceptible to mistaking someone else’s weather for your own. Seven open centers is a person built to absorb a room. It is not a coincidence that the thing critics never stopped reaching for a word for in his films was atmosphere: the hum under a scene, dread that arrives before anything has happened, a diner that feels wrong for reasons the script never states. He was working with the exact material his design took in most sensitively. He also, by his own account, suffered real anxiety and anger before he started Transcendental Meditation in 1973, at 27, and stayed with it every day for the next fifty-two years. A chart this open is a chart that has to find some way to sort what is its own from what it picked up. He found one early and never let go of it.
Two gates in his chart sit in centers that stay open for lack of a partner. Gate 56, Stimulation, sits in the Throat with no Gate 11 to complete it. Gate 50, Values, sits in the Spleen with no Gate 27. That matters for a man whose relationship to explaining his own work was famously flat refusal. The storytelling gate was there, activated, without a fixed channel to run through on demand.
The 4/6 and the people who kept coming back
A 4/6 profile builds through its existing network. The fourth line does not audition; it works with the people it already knows, and its opportunities arrive through friendship rather than through the open market. Lynch’s career is close to a textbook case. Jack Nance, Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Grace Zabriskie, Harry Dean Stanton, Naomi Watts, and above all Angelo Badalamenti, who scored nearly everything he made from Blue Velvet onward, were not cast so much as kept. Jack Fisk, his friend from high school in Virginia, was the production designer on Eraserhead, and Fisk and his wife Sissy Spacek put their own money into the film when the American Film Institute grant ran out.
That fourth line runs right through his conscious Earth. Gate 56 line 4 tailors the telling to the relationship, teaching each friend through their own door. Anyone who has read the accounts of being directed by him recognizes that immediately: no unified theory offered to the cast, no explanation of what the film meant, but specific and personal direction given to each actor in terms that worked for that actor and nobody else.
The sixth line lives in three parts. Trial and error until roughly thirty, then a long stretch on the roof watching rather than participating, then a later authority that arrives without being claimed. His roof period ran from about 1976 to about 1996, which is to say it covers Eraserhead’s release, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Fire Walk With Me. That is a strange thing to call a period of watching, and I would not force the metaphor. What I would say is that the work of those twenty years was the work of an observer, someone whose entire subject was looking at American life from slightly above it and reporting what was underneath.
Channel 3-60, and why the films came when they came
Gates 3 and 60 are two of his four Cross of Laws gates. They are also the two ends of one channel, both activated, which makes 3-60, the Channel of Mutation, the only defined channel in the chart. It runs from the Root’s pressure into the Sacral’s generative force, it belongs to Individual circuitry, and its keynote is empowerment. Maia labels his circuitry exactly that.
The thing to understand about 3-60 is that it is a pulse rather than a current. It fires, it stops, it fires again. Nothing schedules it. Discipline does not schedule it, and neither does a studio release calendar.
Here is the release record. Eraserhead in 1977. The Elephant Man in 1980. Dune in 1984. Blue Velvet in 1986. Wild at Heart in 1990. Fire Walk With Me in 1992. Then five years of nothing, then Lost Highway in 1997, The Straight Story in 1999, Mulholland Drive in 2001, Inland Empire in 2006. Then no feature at all for the last nineteen years of his life, broken by Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017. That is a pulse doing what a defined 3-60 does.
His own description of how he worked is almost a mechanical readout of that channel. He talked about ideas as fish, about not being able to make them come, about sitting and waiting with a line in the water until one arrived. His design Earth is Gate 3 line 6, which the gate’s own reading calls the wisdom to stop wrestling with chaos and let the new order emerge in its own timing. He built a fifty-year practice, and eventually a foundation, around a technique whose entire purpose is sitting still twice a day and waiting. A man with one channel, and it a pulse, found the one discipline that does not try to force the pulse.
His conscious Sun is Gate 60 line 4, resourceful exactly where others quit. He shot Eraserhead intermittently from 1971 to 1976, striking and rebuilding sets when the money vanished, funding it with a Wall Street Journal paper route and loans from friends. That is line 4 as a working method rather than as a keynote.
Saturn Return, July 2, 1975
The Saturn Return is the first cycle that audits a design against the life being built on it. It arrives around twenty-nine and asks whether the structure you have assembled is yours. His fell on July 2, 1975, at 29.44, and the transit carries the Right Angle Cross of Tension (39/38 | 21/48) laid over his natal chart.

Natal chart against the July 2, 1975 Saturn Return transit, age 29: the fourth year of Eraserhead, funded by a paper route.
I want to be honest about this one rather than manufacture a headline for it. There is no dated event in July 1975 in the public record of his life. The cycle window runs three and a half years either side of the exact date, though, and that is not empty: Eraserhead had its world premiere inside it, at the Filmex festival in Los Angeles on March 19, 1977, twenty months after the return. What the date itself holds is a condition, and it is the right condition for the cycle. He was four years into a film that had no finish date, working on sets that had been taken down and put back up more than once because the grant had run out, delivering the Wall Street Journal to pay for stock. Eraserhead would not screen for another twenty months. A cross of Tension over a chart in the middle of that is a fair description of where the man was, and Gate 60’s fourth line, resourceful exactly where others quit, is a fair description of what he did about it. He did not quit. He also did not finish on any schedule, which is the same channel talking.
Uranus Opposition, December 6, 1984
The Uranus Opposition arrives around thirty-eight to forty-two, when transiting Uranus sits opposite where it was at birth. Its job is to break open whatever has calcified. It is the cycle that produces the mid-life detonation, and it does not ask permission. His fell on December 6, 1984, at 38.87, under the Right Angle Cross of Consciousness (5/35 | 64/63).

Natal chart against the December 6, 1984 Uranus Opposition transit, age 38: Dune had premiered three days earlier.
Dune premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington on December 3, 1984, and went wide on December 14. His Uranus Opposition landed between those two dates.
He had signed a three-picture deal with Dino De Laurentiis and had not secured final cut. His roughly four-hour version was cut to a little over two hours for release, with new footage shot and voiceover narration added to hold the plot together. The reviews were savage and it lost money. His own account of it later was not defensive: “Dune is a huge gigantic sadness in my life,” and “With Dune, I sold out on that early on, because I didn’t have final cut, and it was a commercial failure, so I died two times with that.” He has also said his single greatest regret as a director was not making sure he had final say.
That is a Uranus Opposition doing precisely the work it exists to do. The calcified thing was the assumption that he could work inside a studio structure on someone else’s terms and still make his own film. It broke, publicly, in the same week the transit peaked. And it held: he took final cut on Blue Velvet two years later, on a much smaller budget from the same producer, and never surrendered it again. A cross of Consciousness over that week is the kind of coincidence I have stopped apologizing for pointing out.
Chiron Return, October 18, 1996
The Chiron Return comes around fifty, when Chiron completes its orbit and returns to its natal degree. In this series it keeps landing on the moment a person stops performing a role and starts occupying it. For a 6th line, it also marks the descent from the roof. His fell on October 18, 1996, at 50.74, with Chiron in Gate 32, continuity, under the Left Angle Cross of Limitation (32/42 | 56/60).

Natal chart against the October 18, 1996 Chiron Return transit, age 50: finishing Lost Highway after five years away from film.
By October 1996 he was finishing Lost Highway, cut by Mary Sweeney, which would open in France that January and in the United States in February 1997. It was his first feature since Fire Walk With Me in 1992, which had been booed at Cannes and had failed commercially, and which was followed by On the Air being canceled after three aired episodes. Those five years were the longest gap of his working life to that point.
A Left Angle Cross of Limitation over the return that ends the roof period reads about as honestly as these things get. The limitation was real and not self-imposed: after 1992 the industry had a settled opinion about whether he could be financed. What came after the descent was the run most people now consider his best, The Straight Story, Mulholland Drive, and eventually The Return, plus a second public life as a teacher of meditation that had nothing to do with film at all. Sixth lines are not supposed to be at their most influential in their twenties. His timing was ordinary for his design and unusual for his industry.
Second Saturn Return, August 8, 2004
The second Saturn Return arrives around fifty-eight to sixty, and where the first one audits the structure you built, the second asks what you intend to leave. His fell on August 8, 2004, at 58.55, under the Right Angle Cross of The Sphinx (7/13 | 2/1).

Natal chart against the August 8, 2004 second Saturn Return transit, age 58: eleven months before the Foundation.
There is no dated event on August 8, 2004 itself. The window either side of it holds two. Mulholland Drive premiered at Cannes on May 16, 2001 and won him the director’s prize there, three years before the exact date, and the Foundation follows eleven months after it. He was shooting Inland Empire on consumer digital video, in pieces, without a completed script, which is the pulse again and not a cycle marker.
What sits inside the window rather than on the date is the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace, created in July 2005, eleven months after the return, to fund meditation instruction for schoolchildren, veterans, and prisoners. A benefit at Radio City Music Hall with Paul McCartney followed. His design Sun is Gate 50 line 6, which models a standard for the next generation rather than enforcing it on the current one, and that is a reasonable description of a filmmaker who would not explain a single frame of his own work to an adult but would spend the last twenty years of his life teaching children to sit still. The Foundation sits inside the return’s window rather than on its date, which is where this cycle’s evidence tends to sit. I am not claiming the transit produced it.
What his design leaves behind
The most useful thing his chart does is what it does next to Dolly Parton’s.
Two people, born a day apart, with the same Type, the same Authority, the same profile, the same definition, the same cross, the same two defined centers and the same single channel, and the same Sun and Earth in the same gates and the same lines on both sides of the chart. One of them built a theme park in the mountains she came from and gave away a hundred and fifty million books. The other made a film in which a woman lives inside a radiator, and refused for forty-eight years to say what it was about.
If you have ever been told that your chart explains you, this is the correction. A chart tells you the mechanics: how decisions want to be made in your body, where you take in the world and get confused by it, whether your energy is a current or a pulse. It does not tell you what to point that at. Both of them ran on a Sacral yes and a pulse that could not be scheduled. Both of them worked inside constraints that would have stopped most people, and both of them, in the end, spent their last decades building something for other people’s children. What they chose to make with the same equipment is the part that was never in the chart.
He kept his own instructions simple enough to fit on a card, and they are a fair summary of a 3-60 that never once ran on someone else’s calendar. Keep your eye on the donut. Catch the big fish. And when the fish are not biting, sit there anyway.
His last Solar Return, and the day he died
He died on January 16, 2025, in Los Angeles, four days short of his seventy-ninth birthday. No time of death has been made public, and I would rather leave that blank than estimate it. The death certificate, as reported by Rolling Stone, gives cardiac arrest as the immediate cause, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the condition his emphysema belonged to, as the underlying one.
Four days is the margin by which he missed his next Solar Return. The one that did arrive, the chart for his final birthday on January 20, 2024, computed at the same 3:00 AM Missoula clock time as the birth record, on our own engine and cross-checked in Maia Mechanics, landed its transiting Sun and Earth on the identical Gate 60 line 4 and Gate 56 line 4 his natal Sun and Earth occupy.
Six channels connected that year’s sky to his own design. Two of them delivered the partners this chart had gone without from birth. Transiting Venus, carrying Gate 11, joined his Gate 56 to complete the 11-56 Channel of Curiosity, the storytelling gate partnered at last, and that sky held the channel whole on its own besides, its Earth in Gate 56 alongside Venus in Gate 11. Transiting Jupiter, carrying Gate 27, joined his Gate 50 to complete the 27-50 Channel of Preservation. The other four bridges were the 8-1 Channel of Inspiration, the 35-36 Channel of Transitoriness, the 10-57 Channel of Perfected Form, and the 18-58 Channel of Judgment. He ran seventy-eight years on one channel. His last birthday sky lent him six more.
