Less than a year later, in 1995, she married Les Brown, the motivational speaker and author who encouraged her to finally write down the story this return was surfacing, and helped her land the book deal that became her 1997 autobiography, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory. Nothing is dated to August 25, 2002 itself, but the window either side of it, running from February 1999 to February 2006, is one of the fuller ones in her record. Her son James Newman III, who managed her career, died of heart failure on 10 July 1999 at thirty-six. Her album At Last won her first solo Grammy, for Best Traditional R&B Album, in 2000. She remarried, to corporate consultant William McDowell, in April 2001. On the far side, the Mormon gospel choir she created and directs, Saints Unified Voices, released One Voice in 2005 and won a Grammy with it, and she took a BET Lifetime Achievement Award the same year.
