James A. Garfield's Bardo: Eleven Weeks to the Sea

Ra Uru Hu taught the Bardo, the structured unraveling that follows physical death, using his own passing in 2011 as the illustration his students would carry forward. James A. Garfield’s chart brings this series a case with an unusual shape: his birth time is a family memory carrying a Low reliability flag, while his death is among the best-documented moments of his life, timed to the minute in the attending physicians’ own public announcement issued from Elberon the night he died. The Bardo calculation runs entirely on that second timestamp, so nothing below leans on the memory-sourced 2:00 AM.

What happened between Washington and the sea

Garfield was shot on the morning of July 2, 1881, by Charles Guiteau, a rejected office-seeker, at the Baltimore and Potomac railroad station in Washington. One ball grazed his arm; the second lodged deep behind his pancreas, where no doctor found it while he lived. What followed was eleven weeks of public dying: repeated probing with unwashed instruments, an infection that wasted him from over two hundred pounds to around one hundred and thirty, even Alexander Graham Bell at the bedside with an induction device built to hunt the bullet, defeated, the story goes, by the metal springs of the bed. On September 6 his doctors sent him by special train to Francklyn Cottage at Elberon, on the New Jersey shore, where volunteers had laid a spur of track overnight so his car could roll to the cottage door, in the hope that sea air would do what medicine hadn’t. He died there on September 19, 1881, at 10:35 PM, the second president murdered in office, sixteen years after Lincoln.

Where transit Earth stood

In Ra’s teaching, physical death is the moment when the two aspects of a design that placed a person in this life, and kept the body animated, leave the physical form for good. The personality stays behind for a while: memory, conditioning, the sense of self, still running even though the vehicle that carried it is gone. Ra taught that this dissolution keeps a schedule. It moves through three line-positions in a fixed order, and the order is set entirely by the gate and line transiting Earth held at the instant of death.

At 10:35 PM local time on September 19, 1881 (3:35 AM Greenwich time on September 20), computed directly in Maia Mechanics, Human Design Professional Software licensed from Jovian Archive, transiting Earth sat in Gate 36, the Gate of Crisis, line five, the line that, on the living side of the wheel, “does its deepest emotional work out of view, surfacing only when it’s resolved.” After eleven weeks in which an entire country watched a crisis run to its end, the wheel closed his story with Earth grounded in Crisis itself. A line-five entry opens the same three-stage sequence Ra’s own chart walked in March 2011: reunion, then vision, then time, typically closing out over roughly a day to a day and a half.

What this doesn’t reach for

Ra took his own case one layer further, naming the planet exalted at the exact line his Earth held when he died. That layer belongs to the Rave I’Ching, and this site has no licensed source for it, so this piece stops where its own published mechanics stop: the position transit Earth held, and the stage that position opened.
