Steve Jobs's Bardo: The Afternoon in Palo Alto

Ra Uru Hu taught the Bardo, the structured unraveling that follows physical death, through his own passing in March 2011, the worked example his students carry forward. Steve Jobs died that same year, just under seven months later. His chart is famous on this site for the wrong kind of precision: a recorded birth time that sits three minutes from a border that flips his profile, his Incarnation Cross, and his Heart Center. His death carries the opposite kind. The certificate filed in Santa Clara County records the hour, and the Bardo runs on that hour alone, with no birth time anywhere in the calculation.

What happened in Palo Alto

The pancreatic tumor was found in October 2003, and the eight years that followed are public history: the surgery he delayed and then accepted in July 2004, the liver transplant in 2009, the medical leaves, and his resignation as Apple’s chief executive on August 24, 2011. On October 4, 2011, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S without him. He died the next afternoon, October 5, at 3:00 PM at his home in Palo Alto, with his family around him. The death certificate, reported by Bloomberg, lists respiratory arrest as the immediate cause, brought on by the tumor’s spread. His sister Mona Simpson’s eulogy, published in the New York Times, records his last words, spoken hours earlier while he looked past his family’s shoulders: “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.”

Where transit Earth stood

In Ra’s teaching, death is the moment the two aspects of a design that place a person in a life, and that animate the body itself, separate from the physical form for good. The personality lingers: memory, conditioning, self-image, still present for a while after the vehicle that carried them stops. Ra taught that this dissolving follows a fixed, time-limited sequence, three line-positions in a row, and that the order is set entirely by where transiting Earth sat, by gate and line, at the instant of death.

At 3:00 in the afternoon in Palo Alto on October 5, 2011 (10:00 PM Greenwich time), computed in Maia Mechanics, Human Design Professional Software licensed from Jovian Archive, transiting Earth sat in Gate 21, line four. Gate 21 is the Hunter, the Heart Center’s gate of willpower over one’s own territory, and its fourth line is the one that, on the living side of the wheel, “builds influence through alliances, controlling by agreement rather than force.” It is hard to read that placement without hearing every biographer who reached for the word control to describe him, and the chart post linked above spends most of its length on his Heart Center for the same reason. The certificate’s 3:00 PM matters here the way a filed document always matters in this series: transit Earth had entered line four only minutes before, so this is a reading a documented hour can support and a guessed one could never anchor.

A line-four entry opens the sequence one line before the one Ra’s own chart walked in March of that same year: passage, then reunion, then vision, typically closing out over roughly a day to a day and a half.

What this doesn’t reach for

Ra’s own teaching went a layer deeper for his own passing, naming the planet exalted at the exact line his Earth held when he died. That detail lives in the Rave I’Ching itself, and this site has no licensed source for that layer, so this piece stops at where transit Earth stood and which stage it opened, with nothing filled in past what can be shown.

What it leaves you with

None of this is offered so you’ll watch the sky for signs of your own ending. Ra taught the Bardo as evidence that the intelligence organizing a life doesn’t stop at the last breath, and the illustration his students still use came from the same year this case belongs to. Jobs told his biographer he wanted to believe the accumulated wisdom of a life somehow endures past death. The mechanics Ra left behind describe something close to that, with a structure and a timetable, and a man whose chart spent this whole series balanced on borders, three minutes at his birth, a handful more at his death, still left the sequence readable, because a filed document held the hour.
