Saturn Return: What Fell Apart at Thirty

I teach the Saturn Return from my own chart in PTL2: a 6/3 discovering role model, two gates in detriment, and the year everything I'd built by thirty came apart.

I thought I would have it all by the time I was thirty. I can tell you from my own life that thirty is exactly when everything fell apart instead. Saturn is a harsh taskmaster. Mine brought in a lot of crisis and conflict, and a lot of discipline, and the discipline is what did the shattering.

I use my own chart to teach the Saturn Return in PTL2, the second level of the IHDS professional training, because I am the one client in the room I am allowed to show in full. A real chart with a real before and after teaches the mechanics faster than a hypothetical one.

The reading itself

I had my own Saturn Return read in 2014, by Becky Markley, a Human Design analyst who worked closely with Ra Uru Hu for years and edited many of the books this system is taught from. I only found Human Design at thirty-four or thirty-five, well after my own Saturn had already done its work on me, so the reading was retrospective: a map of a storm I had already been standing in without a name for it.

My natal Profile is 3/5. My Saturn cycle Profile is 6/3, a discovering role model. The shift is smaller than it looks on paper: my natal nodes already run through a line 6, so the cycle did not ask me to become someone new, only to live out the 6 I already carried underneath the 3.

My natal cross is the Right Angle Cross of Contagion. The Saturn cycle recasts that as a Left Angle Cross of Obscuration, a name I have double-checked every time since the first run of this class, when I caught myself teaching from the wrong slide and fixed it on the spot. An Obscuration cycle pulls you out of whatever nest you were raised in. Mine did exactly that: I broke out of my first marriage and the family I had married into, and went out into the world to find out what I was actually for.

The two gates I have to thank

Saturn does its harshest work through whatever you carry in detriment, and I have two of them.

Gate 62, Line 2, in detriment: the discipline necessary for detail work. I have the gift for the information. I never had the patience for the follow-through, and Saturn made sure I felt exactly how much that cost me.

Gate 42, Line 6, in detriment: the refusal to share the benefits of growth with others. I used to wonder why I would pour myself into one person and hold back from another, until I understood what was actually running underneath it. I am grateful for this one in detriment. Without it, I would have given everything away for free years ago and had nothing left to build with.

What actually happened at the bottom of it

I had two choices in front of me coming out of that decade: go back to school for psychology, or gamble everything on this strange new system I had just found. I talked to the woman who ran admissions, and she worked out a payment plan I could actually afford on almost no income, and I took the gamble. That decision is the reason I teach this at all.

I met my husband right after my own Saturn Return closed. He met me right as his was starting. Neither of us knew that at the time. Most of what a Saturn Return does only becomes legible in hindsight.

What I tell my students

Nobody I have ever met says their Saturn Return was easy. If someone had told me in advance what mine would look like, I would have argued with them the whole way through it anyway, because a 3 has to find out by doing rather than by being warned. What the reading gave me afterward was permission to stop treating that decade as evidence something was wrong with me, and start reading it as the program doing exactly what a first Saturn is built to do: close one identity so a sturdier one can be tested under pressure.

If you are somewhere in your late twenties or early thirties and it feels like the floor is being pulled out from under you, that is very likely what this is. It ends. Mine ended the way the cycle Profile said it would: a 6/3, discovering a role model I had no plan to become.

More on how this cycle sits alongside the ones that follow it is on the Human Design life cycles overview, and my own Uranus Opposition, Chiron Return, and Second Saturn get the same treatment in the posts that follow this one.
