The Second Saturn: A Cycle I Teach But Haven't Lived

I’ll say the honest thing first, the way I said it to my own class: I have never lived a Second Saturn Return. I have never offered one as a reading on my own site, and in years of taking clients, nobody has ever asked me for one. What I teach on this cycle in PTL2 is theory, same as it would be for you if you’re reading this anywhere south of your late fifties. I still teach it honestly, dates and all, rather than skipping it because I haven’t walked through it myself yet.

Why Ra left it out of the software

Ra Uru Hu never built the Second Saturn Return into Human Design’s software as its own reading. His reasoning: the advent of Chiron was evidence to him that there may be no clean “second” Saturn at all, that a third pass through the same 29-year arc is just as real, and that leaning hard into any of them risks realigning a person to what is, by then, a fading influence. His caution was specifically about over-reading it. He never said it does nothing.

The cycle still lands on a real biological clock, roughly every twenty-nine to thirty years, so a second pass arrives somewhere in the late fifties to early sixties, and, if the pattern holds, a third around ninety. Ra’s widow has said the same thing more gently: it can be significant, not always, and increasingly less so as people keep working well past sixty by choice rather than necessity. Saturn is about discipline and commitment, and plenty of people are still doing exactly that decades past the age this cycle used to be read as a hard stop.

My own dates

My biological approach to this cycle begins around age fifty-eight, which lands in 2035 for me. I am stating that the way I’d want a client to hear it from me: as a date on a calendar, not a verdict. Nothing in Human Design gives us a tool that predicts what a cycle like this will bring for any specific person, and I teach that limit as clearly as I teach the mechanics.

My Second Saturn cross runs Left Angle, through Gate 59, Line 6, the harmonic bonding gate, on the sixth line’s roll of the dice. I already told my class I can’t picture myself living out a Gate 59 kind of decade at that age the way a younger chart might, and that’s exactly the point: the same gate reads differently depending on what stage of life is actually holding it. That’s a teaching point, not a prediction.

Ra’s own example

Ra’s second pass through this cycle arrived in 2006, and by every account it was a productive stretch: the work he had been building for years finally reached the audience it was aimed at. That’s the duality I teach alongside the caution. A fading influence doesn’t mean a fading person.

The deeper mechanics of how a design actually closes, the sequence Ra’s chart went through at the end of his life, are his own material and belong to him. I walk through them in the video above rather than retype them here. What I’ll say in writing is what the video also says: there’s no guarantee built into any of this, in either direction. Don’t teach a client that this cycle brings death. Teach them what it’s actually built to test.

How to teach a cycle you haven’t lived

Teach this cycle the way I’m teaching it here: honestly, including the parts you haven’t lived. A client can tell the difference between a reading built on real mechanics and one built on borrowed certainty, and this is the one cycle in the curriculum where an analyst has to be comfortable saying “here’s the theory” instead of “here’s what happens.” That discomfort is the actual lesson.
