Bob Marley's Human Design: What Survives a Disputed Birth Date

His birth time comes from a biography and he disputed the date itself. What holds regardless: the Cross of Masks, the Prodigal, and the 43-23 channeling channel.

Bob Marley’s chart is a harder case than it looks, and a more rewarding one. The birth data is genuinely contested, and yet almost everything worth saying about his design survives the contest intact.

What the record actually says

The birth time in general circulation comes from Timothy White’s biography Catch a Fire, which gives 2:30 AM on February 6, 1945, in Saint Ann, Jamaica. A second time, 9:30 AM, circulates in astrology and Human Design material without a clear source attached to it.

There is no birth certificate. And the problem runs deeper than the hour: Marley himself said February 6 was the wrong date. His passport carried it, and he disputed it. Another of his biographers, Robert Duncan, wrote directly that there is a question over the accuracy of the data.

So we have a chart resting on a biographer’s time, for a day the subject said was not his.

Before reading anything into it, the honest move is to find out how much of the chart actually depends on the disputed part.

The two published times give the same chart

Both were computed. At 2:30 AM and at 9:30 AM, February 6 produces an identical design:

A Projector, 5/1 profile, self-projected authority, single definition, on the Left Angle Cross of Masks. Same defined centers, same channels. The only difference between the two is color, which is the fastest-moving layer in the chart.

That is worth pausing on. The two competing sources disagree by seven hours and still land on the same type, the same authority, and the same cross.

What holds across the entire day

I then ran every quarter hour from midnight to midnight. Four things never move at all.

His incarnation cross. The Left Angle Cross of Masks, 13/7 | 43/23, holds for all twenty-four hours. Every profile the day can produce is a left angle profile, so the angle itself never changes either. A left angle is transpersonal karma: a life aimed outward, at others, rather than at the fulfillment of a personal destiny.

The keynote of this cross is working through the roles other people project onto you, and delivering insight from behind them. It is difficult to think of a cleaner description of a man who became a global symbol, wore several at once (prophet, revolutionary, peacemaker, tourist-board mascot), and kept transmitting through whichever one was being projected at the time.

The 33-13 Channel of the Prodigal. From Gate 13, The Listener, in the G Center, to Gate 33, Privacy, in the Throat. This closes the Collective Sensing, or abstract, circuit, the experiential stream of the bodygraph.

Gate 13 is the witness. People tell it things: life stories, regrets, things they have told nobody else. It gathers what people have lived and holds it. Gate 33 is the retreat where that material is processed, and then the voice that recounts it. An identity organized around receiving experience, joined to a voice built for telling it back.

For an artist whose entire catalog is the collective experience of a people, sung back to them and then to everyone else, this is about as on the nose as the mechanics get.

The 43-23 Channel of Structuring. From Gate 43, Insight, in the Ajna, to Gate 23, Assimilation, in the Throat. Individual Knowing circuitry.

This is knowing that arrives whole, with no reasoning process behind it, which then has to find language. Ra identified the 20-57 Brainwave as one of the two channeling channels, meaning a channel that tunes into something beyond. In my own work I put two more in that same short list: the 43-23, and the 30-41 Channel of Recognition in the collective abstract, which is the one I carry myself. Those three are the ones I would name without hesitation, and I would not pretend the list is finished.

Ajna, G and Throat defined. Whatever else the day does, those three are consistent, and every one of his channels terminates in the Throat.

Put those together

Gate 13 receives what people have lived. Gate 43 receives what does not come from people at all. Both empty into the Throat, through Gate 33 and Gate 23 respectively.

Two intake channels, one outlet. A design built to take in collective experience and something from beyond it, and to have no way of holding either in silence.

Then the authority. Self-projected authority runs only in Projectors, and only where the G Center connects to the Throat by one of four channels. Marley’s is the 13-33. With self-projected authority there is no inner voice to consult before speaking: the truth arrives in the speaking, when the person hears their own voice say it.

The mechanism of that authority, in a man whose medium was his voice, is the finding here. He would not have known what he thought until he sang it.

What does not hold

Now the parts to be careful with.

Type moves. He is a Projector from midnight until around a quarter past seven in the evening. After that a Sacral channel completes and he becomes a Generator with sacral authority.

Both published times fall in the Projector window. A Generator reading of Bob Marley requires a birth after roughly 19:15, and no published source puts him there. If you have seen his chart given as a Generator, that chart is using a time nobody has sourced.

Authority moves with it. Self-projected until early evening, briefly splenic when the 16-48 Wavelength completes, then sacral.

Profile moves. 5/1 for most of the day, 5/2 from six in the evening, 6/2 from nine.

Definition moves. Single for most of the day, split by the evening.

And the Variable moves fastest. At 2:30 AM his motivation is Hope; at 9:30 AM it is Desire. One of the two published times, and the color has already changed.

What you can responsibly say about Bob Marley’s design

That he was on the Left Angle Cross of Masks, carrying the 33-13 Prodigal and the 43-23 Structuring, with Ajna, G and Throat defined and everything running to the voice. That Gate 13 made him a witness people confided in, that Gate 33 made him the one who tells it back, and that the 43-23 is a channeling channel.

Not that he was a 6/2 Generator. Not the profile at all, with any confidence. Not the color, the motivation, or the determination.

What strikes me about this chart is that the durable part is the interesting part. The cross, the two channels and the direction of flow are the design of a man who received things and could not keep them to himself, and none of that depends on an hour nobody can verify, or even on a date he said was wrong.

For the same analysis applied to a chart where the date is settled but the hour is a guess, see Esther Hicks, and for a chart rated dirty data outright, Hillary Clinton. All three carry the 43-23.

The method behind all six charts, and what it means for your own, is on the birth time accuracy page.

His last Solar Return, and the day he died

Marley died on May 11, 1981, at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida. He was thirty-six. The melanoma found under a toenail in 1977 had spread to his lungs and brain, and the flight home from his final round of treatment in Germany carried him no further than Florida, as Biography.com’s account of his death tells it. The record holds its shape to the very end: the date of his death is beyond dispute, while the time attached to it, 11:45 AM, comes from later reporting, with no hospital statement or death certificate behind it. A life that entered the record on a biographer’s word left it on a reporter’s.

His last Solar Return, the chart for his final birthday on February 6, 1981, landed his transiting Sun and Earth on the identical Gate 13 and Gate 7 they occupy natally, computed in Maia Mechanics, Human Design Professional Software licensed from Jovian Archive, against the 2:30 AM biography time. Cast again at 9:30 AM, the other circulating time, it lands the same way, gate for gate and channel for channel; if February 6 was the wrong day, as Marley said, the return is cast for the wrong sky, and that caveat belongs to every number in this section. Three channels connected that final year’s sky to his own design: the 16-48 Wavelength, the same channel that flickers briefly through the birth-day sweep above, the 32-54 Channel of Transformation, and the 55-39 Channel of Emoting.

And that birthday’s sky held one more shape. Among the channels the transits completed entirely among themselves was his own: the Sun on Gate 13 and the North Node on Gate 33, the Prodigal standing whole in the field around him, the witness joined to the voice that tells it back, for the ninety-four days that were left.

What his cycles show

Marley’s natal cross, the Left Angle Cross of Masks, carried on a 5/1 profile, runs on absorbing whatever role the world projects onto you and delivering insight from behind it rather than arguing your way out of the costume. He died May 11, 1981, at 36, more than two years before the Uranus Opposition his chart would have reached in November 1983, so the Saturn Return below is the only cycle on record.

  • Saturn Return, 1973, age 28. Under the Left Angle Cross of Upheaval (18/17 | 39/38), Island Records released Burnin’ on October 19, 1973, eighteen days after the exact date, the album that carried “I Shot the Sheriff” out into the wider world and confirmed the Wailers as an international act.
