Does your birth time matter in Human Design?
Your birth time matters, but not uniformly across the chart. The gates your Sun activates, and therefore your incarnation cross, hold across roughly six days and survive almost any plausible error. Your type, authority and definition depend on channels completing, and the Moon crosses a gate about every ten hours, so those can change inside a single day. Your profile shifts about every twenty-three hours and the Variable colors about every three and three-quarter hours. The finer the layer, the more an unverified time costs you.

The hierarchy of stability
Every activation in your bodygraph is a body standing in a gate. How long it stays there is just orbital mechanics, and it decides how fragile that part of your chart is.

Read down that column and the practical rules fall out. Anything set by the outer planets or the nodes is effectively immune to a wrong birth time. Anything set by the Sun is safe at the gate level and vulnerable at the line level. Anything that depends on the Moon can change while you are still in the delivery room.
Why type and authority are the ones that flip
A channel completes when both of its gates are activated, and a defined center is a center with a completed channel attached. Type, authority and definition all follow from that.
So they do not move at the pace of the Sun. They move at the pace of whichever body is holding the gate that completes the channel, and the Moon is by far the fastest thing in the chart. In the Trump case study, his design Moon sits in gate 59 until 12:01 in the afternoon. When it leaves, the 59-6 channel breaks, the Sacral loses its definition, and a Manifesting Generator becomes a Manifestor. One body, one gate, a completely different life strategy.
This is why "type and authority are the stable parts" is only half true. They are stable against small errors when no channel boundary is nearby, and they are the first thing to go when one is.
If you do not know your birth time
- Get the record first. In many countries the time is on the long-form birth certificate. That single document outranks every other method.
- Ask, and write down what you are told. A parent's memory is worth having, and it is worth recording how confident they were.
- Treat a rectified time as a hypothesis. Rectification works backwards from life events to estimate a time. It is a real technique and it is still an estimate.
- Read only what survives. With no time at all, your Sun and Earth gates and your incarnation cross are usually still readable. Type, authority, profile, definition and the whole Variable are not.
- Never let a chart overrule your body. If a reading tells you that you are a type you do not recognize, the birth time is a likelier culprit than you are.
Start with your own free chart, then read the types and the authorities to see which parts of it your body actually confirms.
Two questions come up often enough to have their own answers: whether a C-section changes your chart, and whether your chart can change at all.
Seventeen worked examples
Rather than argue this in the abstract, I took seventeen charts, sixteen public and one my own, computed each one against every candidate birth time and every quarter hour of the day, and reported what held and what did not. Each has a different kind of data behind it.
Esther Hicks
A blogger created the time by observation and said so outright. Projector and mental authority hold all day; the profile is 4/6, 4/1 or 5/1 depending on the hour.
Bob Marley
The time comes from Catch a Fire, and Marley said the date itself was wrong. Both published times give a Projector; a Generator reading needs an hour nobody has sourced.
Hillary Clinton
Rated DD, with five competing times across twenty hours. Manifesting Generator at every hour of the day, but her authority turns on twenty-six minutes.
Donald Trump
One of six documented charts in the set. His type turns on sixty-seven minutes, which the certificate settles, and his Motivation still sits fourteen minutes from a boundary.
LaVeena B. Archers, PhD
My own. A nineteen-minute rectification moves my Motivation, Variable, Design Moon and life trajectory at once, while Type, Authority and cross hold across the entire day.
Ra Uru Hu
Three circulating times inside a quarter hour, producing one identical chart down to the color. The tightest data in the series, and no document behind it.
Eric Dane
A documented chart with room to spare. Type, authority and definition hold across six hours in either direction of the certificate minute; even his profile survives five hours past it.
Tim Curry
An exact noon is what a guess sounds like rather than a clock reading. And yet type, authority and definition hold from midnight to nearly 7pm regardless, weak data that happened to sit nowhere near a boundary.
David Lynch
The most immovable chart in the set. Type, authority and definition are identical at every one of the 1,440 minutes of his birth day. Only the profile turns, at 8:44am, almost six hours clear of the certificate time.
Robert Redford
His incarnation cross holds at every minute of the day, and his definition turns once, at 21 minutes past midnight, nearly twenty hours before the certificate time. The profile is the only thing that moves anywhere near him.
Connie Francis
The rarest type in the system, held by a two-hour margin. She is a Reflector from midnight until 9:42am and then a Projector, a Manifestor and a Projector again before the day is out. Four type-and-authority combinations in twenty-four hours, and only the certificate says which one she was.
Diane Keaton
The narrowest margin in the set. Splenic Projector holds until 3:47am, which puts her recorded 2:49am fifty-eight minutes from becoming a Sacral Generator. A whole career of waiting for the invitation rests on under an hour of documented time.
Joe Biden
His remembered 8:30am comes from decades later, but a same-day Scranton newspaper with no clock time in it still eliminates half the day, closing off a profile-and-cross boundary his own memory never could.
Rod Stewart
The published 9:45pm was built from an autobiography, a secondhand family quote, and a guessed pub closing hour stacked together. It lands four minutes from an authority boundary, and the reliability score there reads Low.
Paramahansa Yogananda
The first case here about the zone rather than the time. Three readings of one figure, thirty-three minutes apart, because nobody can tell if a longitude correction was already applied. All three land in the same wide quiet stretch of the day, hours from the nearest boundary.
Pope John Paul II
Ten circulating times spanning eleven hours, and type, authority, definition, and cross never move once. Only the profile forks, and the best-sourced cluster, four people independently quoting the man himself, points somewhere different than the number most summaries repeat.
Dolores Cannon
Generator and Sacral authority at every one of the 1,440 minutes, and the only thing that moves is her definition. The Channel of Initiation exists for eleven hours of her birthday and not the other thirteen, which puts the most explanatory channel in her chart on the one feature a remembered time cannot guarantee.
The same method runs across the presidential charts, where the data is older and thinner and the boundaries land closer, including seven births at or before the 1781 mutation that carry a limit no birth time can fix.
The pattern across all seventeen: what survives bad data is structural. What fails is the fine detail everybody likes to quote.

A chart run on a guessed time is not a reading, it is a hypothesis.
What changes fastest in a Human Design chart?
The Variable layer. The Sun crosses one color in about three and three-quarter hours, one tone in about thirty-seven minutes, and one base in roughly six minutes. This is why determination, environment, perspective and motivation should only be read from a birth time you can actually verify against a document, and why they are the first thing to discard when the time is uncertain.
Why does my type change when I adjust my birth time?
Because type depends on which channels are complete, and a channel completes when both of its gates are activated. The Moon moves through a gate in about ten hours, far faster than any other body, so a Moon activation can enter or leave a gate within a single day and make or break a channel as it goes. In one case study here, a Manifesting Generator becomes a Manifestor at 12:01 because the design Moon leaves gate 59 and the Sacral loses its definition.
What is a Rodden rating?
It is the accuracy classification used by Astro-Databank for birth data. AA means the time is sourced from a birth certificate or official record. A means it comes from the person or their family. B means it comes from a biography. C means the source is unverified. DD means dirty data, where two or more conflicting quotes exist and none is qualified. X means no time is known. Almost every famous chart circulating in Human Design is B, C or DD.
Should I get my birth time rectified?
Rectification is the practice of working backwards from known life events to estimate a birth time. It is a legitimate technique with a long history, and it is also an estimate rather than a record, so a rectified chart should be held as a strong hypothesis rather than a document. If a birth certificate exists, get the certificate first. Rectification is what you do when it does not.
Why do celebrity Human Design charts disagree with each other?
Usually because the underlying birth times disagree and nobody says so. Hillary Clinton has five circulating times spanning twenty hours. Bob Marley has a time from a biography and a date he disputed himself. Esther Hicks has a time that a blogger created by observation and openly described as a guess. Two readings of the same person can both be competent and still reach different types, because they are reading different charts.
