Esther Hicks' Human Design Chart: What Survives an Unverified Birth Time

Esther Hicks’ chart circulates widely, usually as a 5/1 Projector on the Left Angle Cross of Dominion. In our study group we went through it properly, and the interesting question turned out to be less what the chart says than how much of it we are entitled to say at all.

The short version: the most striking thing in her design is also the part that cannot be shaken, and the parts everyone quotes are the parts resting on a guess.

Where the birth time actually comes from

Her birth date and place are well attested: March 5, 1948, in Coalville, Utah.

The birth time is another matter. The 21:51 that every published version of this chart uses traces back to a 2017 blog post, whose author is admirably honest about it. They created the time, in their own words, not through formal rectification but by listening to her anecdotes over many years and by observation. They had written to her office and been told, reasonably, that personal information was not forthcoming. They finish by saying they could well be wrong.

No birth certificate. No Rodden rating. So the first question is which parts of the chart would survive being wrong.

I ran every quarter hour of that day. Here is what came back.

What holds no matter what

From midnight until about a quarter past eleven at night, several things do not move at all.

Her natal design is Projected, with no inner authority

The Projector type holds, with bitterness as the not-self theme and success as the signature.

Her authority is mental, which the software calls Sounding Board, and which is also written as environmental authority or, bluntly, no inner authority. Every center below the Throat is open, so the authority hierarchy runs out of instruments and the decision process moves outside the body entirely.

This is rare, and it is easy to misread as a deficiency. A person with mental authority has no interior yes or no available to them. There is no guttural response, no emotional wave to ride out, no splenic hit, no felt sense of will. What they have instead is the process of articulation in the right conditions: they discover what is true by saying it aloud, more than once, in front of people they trust, and noticing which version keeps surviving the retelling.

Everything below the Throat being open also means she samples and amplifies everyone else’s inner signals without owning any of them. Taken in wisely that becomes extraordinary perception, the capacity to read what a room is feeling. Taken in unwisely, any borrowed signal can impersonate an inner authority.

Her entire definition is mental, and it ends in the voice

Two channels, and nothing else:

The 63-4 Channel of Logic, running from Gate 63, Doubt, in the Head, to Gate 4, Formulization, in the Ajna. This is the pressure of doubt demanding an answer, met by the mind’s capacity to formulate one. It is a mental projected channel, and its whole nature is hypothesis: a formula offered up that may or may not prove out.

Head, Ajna, Throat. Mental pressure, conceptualization, voice. No motor anywhere, no body awareness attached to any of it.

There is a detail here I want to name without making too much of it. Her Personality Sun sits in Gate 63, the Gate of Doubt, and it stays there whatever the hour. Roughly seventy percent of her imprinting runs through that Sun. The conscious solar theme of a teacher whose message is largely about reaching for certainty and the better-feeling thought is the gate of doubt itself. Mechanically that is not a contradiction. Gate 63 generates the pressure to question, and a life can very reasonably be organized around answering that pressure rather than sitting in it.

The 43-23 is a channeling channel

Ra identified the 20-57 Brainwave as one of the two channeling channels, meaning a channel that tunes into something beyond. In my own work I have added two more: the 43-23, and the 30-41 Channel of Recognition in the collective abstract, which is the one I carry myself. Those three are the ones I would name without hesitation. The list is not comprehensive and I would not present it as finished doctrine. It is what I have come to so far.

The 43-23 belongs to the Individual Knowing circuit. It is knowing that arrives whole, with no reasoning process behind it, which then has to find language. Gate 43 receives the insight; Gate 23 assimilates it into something sayable. The classic frustration of this channel is knowing something with complete certainty and being unable to account for how you know it, or being called strange until the timing turns and the same words suddenly land.

A woman whose life’s work consists of speaking material she describes as arriving from elsewhere has her entire definition running through the mental circuitry, terminating in the voice, including a channel about knowing that cannot explain itself, and no inner authority of her own to consult first.

And the channel is built from her nodes

Both ends of the 43-23 come from her design nodes: North Node in 23.5, South Node in 43.5.

That is why it cannot move. The nodes take around 106 days to cross a single gate, so no plausible error in the birth time touches them. It is the slowest-moving structure in the chart, and it happens to be carrying the channel that matters most here.

It also means something specific. Per the nodal mechanics, the nodes are the We rather than the I. They are not physical objects but positions in space, windows carrying information from outside the solar cell, and the only imprint in the chart that no planet filters or flavors. Her channeling channel is made entirely of them.

What does not hold

Now the parts everyone quotes.

The profile moves. Born in the morning she is a 4/6. Between nine and noon she is a 4/1. Only from midday onward is she the 5/1 that gets published. Three different profiles inside one day.

The incarnation cross moves. The Personality Sun stays in Gate 63 throughout, but the design side shifts, so before nine in the morning the cross is a different one entirely. The Left Angle Cross of Dominion is a product of the assumed time.

The Variable moves fastest of all, and this is the one to be most careful with. Her published chart gives a Color 3 Motivation, Desire. On the lineage teaching of how the mind interprets the non-physical, Color 3 corresponds to ghosts, meaning disincarnate humans, which is a remarkable correspondence for someone who describes Abraham as a group of non-physical beings who once lived. On that same teaching, a Color 3 out of integrity transfers to its harmonic, Color 6, which is aliens.

I want to be straight about this, because it is the detail I would most like to be true. Color 3 holds for roughly four hours of that day. All six colors occur within the twenty-four, and the Determination cycles through all six as well. The correspondence that fits her public life most beautifully is the one resting on the weakest foundation.

That is usually how it goes. The tighter a chart detail seems to fit a famous life, the more it deserves a sourced birth time before anyone builds on it, because the fit is exactly what stops us checking.

What you can responsibly say

That her natal design is Projected, with mental authority, defined only from the Head through the Ajna to the Throat, carrying the 63-4 and the 43-23. That her conscious Sun is in the gate of doubt. That the 43-23 is a channeling channel, nodally formed and therefore immovable, and that all of this is coherent with a life spent speaking what arrives.

Not that she is a 5/1. Not the Cross of Dominion. Not Color 3, however well it fits.

If a birth certificate ever surfaces, the rest becomes available. Until then the mechanics that survive the uncertainty are the ones worth teaching from, and in this case they are the most interesting part of the chart anyway.
